Viewing, Extracting, Modifying .DAT files in ps2 games?

Does anyone know how to extract the contents of a SOMETHING.DAT file in a ps2 game? I know that's were they hide the game files & scripts & art & music & junk I'd like to eventually figure out how to modify. Are there any tools out there that do this sort of thing? Or does each company use it's own compression?

I already know how to reconstruct a ps2 game's iso & how to get my ps2 to play it...

I've modded PC Games before, but I can't find any ps2 game "modding communities" out there for the fact that when I search google for it I get a bazillion websites about how to put a modchip in your ps2....

Things I'd eventually like to figure out how to do: Add my own songs to games such as DDR & Guitar Hero.
