How can I get my 16x Memorex DVD discs to work on my 8x NEC ND-6500A recorder? I get a error on Nero when I try to burn to them ("burn process pailed at 8x".) I got a bunch of these DVD's on sale - I'd hate to see them go to waste!

Unfortunately you have purchased the worst possible disc you can. There are many threads written on the problems encountered by using these particular discs, my advice is to STOP using these discs to prevent any further errors.

They are too inconsistent, you may get a few to work but MOST will fail.

I would suggest Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden or Sony (made in Japan)

Always burn at around 4X.

Heres a little "LIGHT" reading on the subject.

As Gwen said - memorex = memorsux. The 16x can be made by quite a few different manufacturers - ricoh, cmc, ritek, prodisc, mcc. The only good one is mcc though ricoh and ritek are better than cmc. Pretty much pot luck when buying.
Make sure your firmware is up to date also.
To see who actually made them here's a free prog:

Memorex discs are probably the worst discs to buy. I have had some success using them as data discs when using RecordNow. However, if you must use these with Nero, burn at 4x. Thats about the only way you can guarantee fewer coasters. If there is a Sams Club near where you live, check them out for Verbatims. The one by my house has 100 pack of 8x Verbatim DVD+R and DVD-R for $29. No coasters whatsoever.

Also, I would recommend not using discs that have speeds that exceed your burner. Depending on the burner's firmware, it could take longer to burn if settings are at 16x than it would at 8x if your burner's max write is 8x. Lastly, burn all discs at 4x or 8x to ensure a good burn, 4x if your not worried about time(about 3-4 minuted extra). A lot of times DVDs burnt at 16x have playback problems. Not really worth it, it only saves you a 1 - 1.5 minutes. Hope this helps.
