codec problem with video files

hi all

i have a couple of video files ranging between 170 MB to 250 MB,
when i try to play them on windows media play i get a message,
codec not supported.
can anyone tell me the easiest way to sort this?

you could use GSpot too find which codec is required then post it back here
or you could download a codec pack like this one which I find very good

Thanks Philraz,
got that k lite pack and GSpot, great software.
I need to ask you another favour,
I've been using TMPGEnc and IFOEdit to put my video files on DVD,
But I have had little success and it takes a hell of a long time
even though I have a fast pc.
What would you recommend?

The process of encoding AVI to dvd compliant files is lengthy tmpg will probably give you the best quality but I would recommend as a good balnce of speed and quality try this its the old freeware version of DivXtoDVD and will output ifos and vobs which can be burnt directly to dvd without any further encoding
