What does the PnP Key actually do?

I bought Swap Magic and the Key together. And I now use it without, simply because it doesnt seem to do anything. I boot games from SM and swap the discs by removing the case. But the key does nothing at all.

Whats it do?

its supposed to open the tray without the ps2 knowing, but its poorly made (and likes to blow fuses). Are you following the directions for it?
