Hi gang! I've searched and search the forum and haven't been able to figure out these new problems I've been having with burning.

I have tried several different types of media: Imation DVD-r, Maxell DVD+r, Fuji DVD-r and Fuji DVD+rw... at first I thought my problem was the imation discs (now I'm not so sure, it could be the burner itself).

I am using an external Lite-On DVDR LDW-851S with a USB device.

Software: any dvd + clonedvd2. I have also tried shrink and decrypter as well as dvdfabdecrypter + shrink + decrypter (per a suggestion in the forum).

None of this has worked and each gives me some type of I/O error.

I have not updated the firmware (because I don't know how and haven't been able to find a guide on how to do it). I am also a little scared to do it incorrectly because of the warnings given on the firmware pages that incorrectly installing can damage the drive.

I am grateful for any help or suggestions. Please let me know if you think the burner is just plain shot and I'll have to get a new one. Thanks everyone!

PS: I have used this burner without any problems for about a year. I have recently switched from a desktop unit to a toshiba satellite laptop.... but the problems happened for about 2 weeks while I was still using the laptop.

Here one of the error messages:

Let me know if you want me to post the other two errors. This was the error on using the maxell dvd+r.

Thanks a bunch!!! and sorry if this is a repost, but I couldn't find the answer after searching for two days.

Open DVD decrypter in 'Mode iso write',
It will tell you the model of your burner,
which you can use to get updated firmware.

Look at the pciture in the blue box you can see
the model of your burner.
(Dont use the look-up in the DVD decrypter as is doesnt seem
to work anymore) But the blue box 'destination' will tell you
the info you need to know.
(My info from the picture is DX1620 thats what I would need
to find my firmware updates.)

Once you know the model you can search for updated firmware here:

You really need to get that fw updated it is way behind current is GS0P and even this fw is over a year old. Not much support for your drive but at least update it. All you have to do is dl the zip file and then open it and click and your burner will flash, then power off your computer and your drive.

http://www.liteonit.com/ODD/English/e_downloads/e_firmware_dvd%20...

Yes there is always a risk with flashing a drive so the choice is yours but the fw is so old I doubt it is recognizing your media.

Hi Jizmak! thanks for the tip. I found the firmware, but I don't know what to do with it now that it's been downloaded. I'm checking the firmware site for directions.

If you have any other tips... I would love to have em!

Thanks!!!

DR16HS06.zip

Was the lile link Arnie bear sent.
It is only compressed and extracted to an .exe file.

Simply run the file.
You will have to re-boot but it will guide you.

Good luck and welcome to the forums.

@ Arniebear

Nice link.

Well your drive is really not liking your disks, you can try another brand and see if this makes any difference. As I stated the last firmware update from Lite-on is over a year old so it just might not be recognizing this media.
