.mov files don't play correctly.

When I play .mov files the audio is very ?chopped? - the best word I can think of - and seems to have an echo.

I have tried using Quicktime and Quicktime Alternative. The problem is apparent in either.
I haven't downloaded any extra codecs.

What causes this and what can I do to overcome it?
