i've recently transfered a drive motor from a spare dvd-r drive and now game load faster and no dre's.
i had to modify it a little bit to get it to fit but wasn't that hard. the only noticable thing is that the mini discs spin alot faster and tend to load 2x as fast. full size run fine and the motor will last for at least 4-6 years depending on usage.
the way you moddify a motor is:
METHOD 1
A WHOLE MOTOR
1) use some sort of cutter to cut away excess riming where the screw go in on the motor.
2) make sure to see if it fits, if not cut a little back and see again.
3) if it fits screw it in and plug ribbon cable in.
4) fire up gc and see if it spins. if it does your mod is done and you will never need to buy a replacement motor! :)
pm for help
on a few drives the ribbon cable is bigger than the gc's and you will need to buy a replacement.
some screw holes won't align correctly and will needed to be moddified to fit.
samsung drives are totally diff. and wont properly work(at least for me)
MODDIFING THE GC'S ORIGINAL MOTOR WILL BE COMMING SOON.

i dont have any pics but the drive i used was a sony( the drive motor, not the entire drive)

all the sonys have the same type of motor so i wouldnt worry, only the ribbon cables are diff.

I guess you wont be able to do the same thing with a DVD-R type laser. Only the motor huh? Does the increased read speed seem to mess up your laser at all? It seems to me if everything is loading twice as fast then the laser is doing that much more work.
I will probably end up trying to do this.

I really want to do this but I'm having a hard time finding a SONY branded DVD-Rom drive. If I do, I'm not even sure what model to use. The information given about this is very little

the model # doesnt mater since sonys use the same drive motor. look on ebay for busted ones, you could get em for 5-10 bucks. and what i mean by busted is that the lens doesnt work. make sure it says that in the info.
UPDATED PROCESS
the rimming i meant was on the bottum of the motor where it would screww in on the drive unit. some times this area wont be small enough. dont buy a brand new once since thats a waste. I'd recommend a used dvd-rom drive( the non burner type since they are cheap used.
Dynex, Samsung, Hitachi and Lite-On are all compatible. I was wrong about the samsung ones since they are compatible.

Thanks for the updated list of DVD roms that can be used. This increases my chances now of finding a drive that will work. I'm not looking for a drive where I need to replace the ribbon cable though, looking just for a direct swap. What would you recommend?

I tried all os these and found that the Samsung work decent and are the easiest to fit since they use alluminum for the drive and it is very easy to cut.

What do the rest use, plastic?...wouldn't that be easier to cut?. Thanks a bunch for the info though. My cube is apart right now and I'll be putting in the drive the next couple of days
