Anyone ever heard of this problem? I have a V12 I just modded with a Matrix Infinity green dot v1.75 and a diode laser fix. I also have a v7 with an MI chip. Here's the deal...the V7 will play all the legal backups that I have no matter if they are on -R or +R media but the V12 will boot all -R backups but only a few of the +R backups. Most of the time the error code will be something to the effect of "disc read error" or I will get the red screen of death telling me to insert an original PS2 disc. Thanks for any info you can give me.

the laser in the v12's left a lot to be desired it tends to wear out very quickly
Try using good quality disks and a low burn speed 4X
check out the ps2 guide follow the link in my sig

if ur v12 is new and u didnt use high quality media + burning at 4x, could be either:

1) lens factory settings
2) Diode fix

hopefully its the diode fix being too powerful or something, u can try removing it and boot just one or a few times, being careful not to ruin the lens by using it 'naked'. if it works then maybe you can change to other types of diode fix.

if its the lens pot values, you can try tuning it by small values each time. so far i read that it is not recommended to reduce by more than 20% of the factory set value (pls correct me if im wrong i dont wish to cause damage, but 10% is the standard value i think)

I cant think of any other issue other than these 2, kindly let me know if you actually find a better way to boot them.

by the way, i use crap media(cheap/fake MCC , TY) and burn 8x still works on v9 and v12 ps2. IMO, newer versions should be able to read many of the lower grade medias without messing with the pot values.

If i get the same problem as you, i'll just avoid using +R backups really. saves alot of trouble.

Using cheap media isn't a good idea regardless what version PS2 you have. You may get away with it for awhile, but the cheap dyes will wear down your laser in time. They'll wear down your laser a lot faster than high quality azo dyes from Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim. Booktyping DVD+R's to DVD-ROM will provide better compatibility with the PS2. This is more likely a media issue than anything hardware related. What's the Media ID of those discs you're using? Run em through DVD Identifier and post the results.

I would respond in kind to anyone advocating using cheap media with the PS2. Media issues make up well over 1/2 of the problems I encoutner on AD. There's never any reason to use cheap media. If you order it online, you can get Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim cheaper per disc than CMC Mag or any other God awful media. You may know this, but noobs do not.

Ok , i have a question. I have Sony,Ricoh and Verbatim DVD+RW. They should be quite good quality right?

So can the DVD+RWs be used for regular gaming on the ps2?

No, not without wearing down your PS2 laser in a hurry. That comes straight from modders, not from me. The PS2 laser reflects off the surface of the +/-RW's, and causes it to strain terribly. It's a little more technical than that, but that's the short answer. Just use quality DVD+/-R's. I've never come across a thread where someone has used DVD+/-RW's for an extended length of time without any issues.

Thanks mate. I am also worried about how to make my new ps2 slim v12 last the longest. Im getting a USB HDD for it soon, but i heard there's a lot of games you cant play on it. Oh well, just try my luck. At least it will lower the chances of a worn out laser by the little.

However, the ps2 slim lasers are alot more cheaper than the older ones, so hey it might not be such a bad thing after all ( i sold my fat ps2 and got this new slim one).

Ritek is no longer adequate for PS2 backups in my opinion. I've come across reports of it failing all over. Pick up some Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim's. I've burned 170+ games to TYG02/Yuden000T02 with 0 coasters.

86. Q. Where can I find good deals on legit Taiyo Yuden's and Verbatim's?
A. http://www.supermediastore.com
Great List of Merchants locally, online, in the U.K., etc:
http://www.digitalfaq.com/dvdguides/buyerguides/buymedia.htm

106. Q. Where I can find top notch Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim media locally?
A. This is somewhat of a crap shoot. Big manufacturer's like Fuji, Sony, and Maxell have at one point past or present payed Taiyo Yuden to manufacture media for them. The big companies slap their name on the label even though the discs were manufactured in Japan by Taiyo Yuden. These discs will always be made in Japan. Authentic TY media isn't made anywhere else. Even if it says Made in Japan on the label, there is no gauruntee of getting authentic Taiyo Yuden media. You could still end up with Sony or Fuji media codes. Hence why I said this is a crap shoot. Places like Comp USA, Office Depot, Sam's Club, and Staples will carry Made In Japan branded discs. Again there is no way to know for sure from the package whether these are authentic Taiyo Yuden's. If you don't want to risk getting non TY discs, you can find 50 packs of Verbatim in the afore mentioned chain stores. One other alternative is the Made in Japan High Grade Maxell DVD+R's. They will say Made in Japan on the label and "High Grade" as well. These are excellent media. Remember when using DVD+R's, it's best you have a burner that supports booktyping/bitsetting, and a v.4 PS2 or later. Much thanks goes to kivory666 aka "docTY" for this information. He is indeed the Taiyo Yuden master. The best place to get authentic Taiyo Yuden media is from reputable online vendors like http://www.supermediastore.com http://www.rima.com http://www.meritline.com or http://www.newegg.com
