cant play avi or mpg videos online

my windows media player will play wmp vids, but when i click on a avi, mpg vid they will not play. all that happens is a screen comes up like if i typed in a new net sight, but when it is done nothing happens. looks like a blank net sight.

what can i do to fix this.
