Is HDMI inputs required?

If I connect an HDMI cable from the TV to the DVD player do I need to have HDMI inputs on my receivers? Can I use my receiver to switch to my DVD player with HDMI without connecting HDMI cables to the receiver?

Your question is a bit confusing to understand, but this what I think that you are trying to do:

DVD Player -> HDMI -> Receiver -> HDMI -> TV

That setup is only possible if your DVD player has HDMI out, the receiver has HDMI input/output, and your TV has HDMI input.

If your receiver has HDMI input/output, it may also do convert analog video signals such as S-Video, RBG component vidoe to HDMI output.

Refer your receiver manual for that.

If you're wanting 5.1 surround, you'll need to go to the receiver with the HDMI, then out from receiver with HDMI to the tv.
Since HDMI cables are very expensive, I'd go straight from dvd player to tv, with the HDMI, for video. Then use digital coax or optical for the surround audio from dvd player to receiver.
It's hard enough buying just one HDMI cable. I sure couldn't buy two of them! :o)

Thanks for the info.

I am trying to avoid having to buy an expensive receiver (one that has HDMI inputs). So it looks like I can just connect my HDMI cable from the TV to DVD player directly and use an optical cable (audio) from my receiver. I was thinking that I needed to connect my HDMI cable to the receiver.
