okay this is generally a stupid question but hey it is the newbies corner so this is the best plave to ask i figure.

right now i have DVD Santa, AVI DIVX to DVD, Nero 6 Ultra Edition, Win AVI, XVid and of course my programs that came installed with my computer when purchased (Sonic, windows movie maker, ect.). I still have problems using any of the above stand alone or in combination with each other. right now i am actually considering getting a different program to try and convert and burn with out problems.
I have had problems with out of sync audio, jumpy burns, and even a dash of darkish red video output on burnt DVD's.

so my question is, is this to many applications to have on my computer to try and convert and burn playable DVD's. are they interfering with each other? i have read many of post on what the best program is to use and everyone is different. I do want to be able to add subtitles with out getting 5 more programs for that as well, so an all inclusive program would be ideal. DVD santa crashes everytime i try and burn adding subtitles... Nero is cool for adding menu's but i dont need em, AVI DIVX to DVD converts but my version doesn't have the final burn option and no subtitle capability...I feel like i am getting weighed down by software all trying to accomplish the same thing and i still dont get 100% efficiency. if i feel this way my computer must be feeling similar.

Any suggestions or advice is appreciated.

I also heard that to update my codec's i should uninstall my current ones before installing new ones, is this true?

there is a theory that to many burning apps on your pc will eventually crash it and cause the errors that you are experiencing.I havent had that problem but it does happen. As for software to add subtitles with avi2dvd is pretty good. Not AVI DivX to dvd.

Have a look in filepedia, theres a link at the bottom of the page. You might also unoinstall the programs that are crashing for now to see if that improves your chances of success

Probably Avi2Dvd and Nero, or Winavi and Nero would be enough to convert your AVI files. You can also put subtiles with Winavi. Sonic, which I think is Roxio, that tends to conflict with Nero and get failed burns.

Hey there DJOB1,

First off, you're running A Roxio (your Sonic) prggy which will cause problems no matter what you do. I suggest that you delete that one using your Add and Remove feature in your Control Panel. Once you have finished with that, reboot your PC to "flush out" any left-overs. Normally that would be the end of it BUT, Roxio leaves a plethoria of tentacles and tendrils so you'll need to run Roxio Zap to clean up all the "stuff" it leaves behind in your system.

FindRoxio Zap here:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml

Once you've done that, reboot your PC again to "flush everything out of your PC's system :) (I always reboot my system after every addition or removal, IMO, allowing everything to "find it's own home" truly makes a difference.

It couldn't hurt to run RegClean also - I like to keep my registry clean so I run it after every uninstall and after every few installs as there are files that are left "dangling" after installation -

RegClean ~

We need to do more ~

There are known issues between Roxio and Nero, they really and truly hate each other. Actually, to hear Nero tell it, he doesn't really care BUT Roxio thinks that Nero has designs on his sister and that's bad news on the playground. (Lol) Really, We do have to separate these two proggys and that does take a bit of doing.

Getting rid of Nero ~

"WHOAH there partner, I didn't say I wanted to get rid of Nero ~" No, you didn't. BUT, since you had Nero on your PC along with Roxio then Nero almost assuredly has a corrupted file or 3.
We're going to have to remove both proggys.

We got rid of Roxio, Now, we must uninstall Nero COMPLETELY.

Begin the same, way by deleting Nero from the "Add and Remove" programs in your Control Panel.

The following will help you do a "Clean" uninstall.

You must use all 3 of Nero's Clean tools in order to do the job correctly.

They can all be found here:
http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/enu/Clean_Tools.html

1. General Clean tool
2. Registry cleaner and driver cleaner
3. InCD Clean tool

When you reinstall Nero 6.6 OR Nero's new 7 Ultra Edition, DO NOT install InCD OR if you do, turn it off in startup under msconfig (better to not install it) it can and does cause problems with other proggys.

Load Nero 6.6 up from here:
http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/enu/nero-up.php

OR,

You can upgrade to Nero 7 Ultra Edition ~(:D)
http://www.nero.com/nero7/enu/index.html

When installing and uninstalling programs it's a good practice to complete the operation with a PC reboot. It only takes a minute, help it can, hurt it won't.

Now that we've done that, I know it's a "Pain" but, when it's done correctly the first time, and all the steps are followed then we shouldn't have any problems AND we won't have to do it all over again.

No, you don't have too many proggys. I have approx. 45 different proggys. Some are used rarely or not at all, others I use constantly. It all depends on what you wish to do.

i have read many of post on what the best program is to use and everyone is different.
That's because almost everyone want's to do different projects. You get those proggys you need to do your job, that's why there aren't very many programs that "do it all". Everyones "all" is different.

so an all inclusive program would be ideal
More like a dream for some BUT you're lucky ~

ConvertXtoDVD by VSO does the conversations quickly while maintaining excellent quality AND has a great burn engine included. It also has a subtitle feature you may find will do your work. You may wish to check it out :)

Nero can also handle subtitles well SO, if you have followed my directions and completely uninstalled Nero then installed it again, you s/b all set to go with a perfectly operating program :)

When you install your basic codec's it creates a "Home" for ones that follow. IIMHO, one cannot have too many codecs. When I download a file, no matter what it is, I want it to open properly. Again, that's me ~

Google around and you'll find some all-inclusive codecs packages

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but all Roxio has to go. If you have Nero, that has to go completely as there's no way to clean it while it's corrupted. I also suggest ridding yourself of the Adobe as well. When all is totally out & your system clean, you can put everyone back (except Nero's InCD it's a packet writer and any packet writers try to capture a burner if it can, mucks up things, don't ya know.).

I'll be asking you to do a lot of work but it's really worth it to get your PC in top condition.. Here are some directions to get you going ~

There are known issues between Roxio and Nero and many other proggys come to think about it, they really and truly hate each other. Actually, to hear Nero tell it, he doesn't really care BUT Roxio thinks that Nero has designs on his sister and that's bad news on the playground. (Lol)

Really, We do have to separate these two proggys and that does take a bit of doing.

Let's follow ScubaPete's Guide for Uninstalling Roxio and Nero,

"WHOAH there partner, I didn't say I wanted to get rid of Nero ~" No, you didn't. BUT, since you had Nero on your PC along with Roxio then Nero almost assuredly has a corrupted file or 3.
We're going to have to remove both proggys.

Even getting rid of Roxio is a problem as it weaves itself all through your system and you require a special proggy to get rid of it even after you've uninstalled it.

The best way to rid our selves of Roxio is remove him through "Control Panel", then select "Add and Remove Programs".

After you've done that, you haven't gotten all of Roxio, you need to run this proggy as well ~

Remove all types of Roxio tentacles and tendrils with Roxio Zap ~

Find it here: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml

Once you've done that, reboot your PC to "flush everything out of your PC's system :)

Those are nice canned responses you have there Pete. I notice they're much the same as those for Roxio before Sonic came into the picture. You've been using them a long time though the software has changed. Roxio now lists 10 program offerings in 3 categories. http://www.roxio.com/en/products/index.jhtml The only problem I ever had with Roxio was the batch software. Nero, Pinnacle and others apps come with batch writing software as well. InCD is recommended to be left out of Nero installations if the user is going to be using movie backup apps. Some systems work just fine with Roxio and some don't. You should suggest to the user to first try removing the batch software to see if that makes a difference, if they have it. Then try removing the app to see if that makes a difference. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't, systems vary. According to your posts, Sonic shouldn't be on the market. However, a lot of people find their programs useful. Also, Sonic is no longer the Roxio we knew before and they do enjoy a good market share with satisfied customers. Me among them.

As for having too many codecs on a system, no problem as long as they're not running at the same time. Check the taskmanager to make sure of what's running in the background. As far as numbers go, if that was a problem, my system wouldn't even boot.
