Hi all, it seems like I've been at this forever but I'll try to sum it up quick.

Originally started making movie backups with TDK DVD-Rs and my Digital Max DVD-RW DRW-3S163 burner and everything was fine. Then, after a while I started noticing more and more freezing and when I tried to make a backup from a backup I would get CRC errors.

From reading other posts I updated the firmware for my Digital Max from BSG3 to BSG5, got some Verbatim Advanced AZO DVD+Rs, grabbed Nero 7.0.5.4 and got about 3 flawless backups with DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15, DVD Info showed no errors with those first few but since then I'm just making coasters with freezing backups from the same batch.

Other changes I have tried with DVD Shrink have been to lower the target size to 4360 then to 4300 with no luck.

I'm not sure what else I could try and any suggestions would be awesome, you have no idea.

Thanks much.

Poor quality media/poor quality burner/or a combo of both.Burning too fast/too slow/paper sticker labels/multi-tasking are the leading contributers to the crc errors on backup copies.

Please explain:Freezing while it is burning?
Or on playback? Is this while you view them on a stand alone player or a pc drive?

Oh yeah, sorry, I should have posted the log.

Also to cover the other questions I forgot: I always drop the speed down to 4x, I don't multitask on this machine, it was just setup just to backup movies and for storage so I usually walk away from it after I start burning or whatever. I don't use labels because these are inkjet white printable media but I tested these w/DVDInfo before printing a label on it. I read somewhere about a program to check the media to see if it is quality but I couldn't find that thread again.

These movies freeze when watching on a standalone player, just my burned movies though. It stops and then picks up a little while later in the movie.

Thanks for responding.

I burned another backup and here is the log:

Hi, thanks for sending that info my way. I just have a quick question with this:

> - hmmm, i don't know much about the Abit Highpoint RAID drivers but i suspect DMA needs to be ON though

I guess these are my IDE Controllers? Both primary and secondary show the transfer mode as: "DMA if Available" and Current Transfer Mode as: "Multi-Word DMA Mode 2". Is there a way I can turn it on during burning? Maybe this is the problem. The only other option to select is "PIO mode".

Thanks again for all the help.

Your burner drive and main hard drives should be on UDMA/DMA/or if available for your transfer mode-which look ok.I have UDMA 5 and UDMA 2 on my primary and secondary.

I also don't know about the raid and how to activate dma for them.

That's where 95% of those issues usually pop up. Make sure they play ok in your pc,using the burner drive that produced those backups. Note where those issues pop up on your stand alone player and view that area carefully when you play it back on your pc. This will help verify that it is your stand alone player's fault.

MCC-004:

These are high quality discs, but there's a drawback. On my benq 1640, I have to burn them at least 8x. I scanned a few of them at different test speeds. After encountering a few of my backups that had too many read errors, the problem was because I burned them at 2.4x and 4x. Too many errors at those speeds, that could lead to issues later on. Backup at 8x scanned the best, and 12x was just a hair more errors.

Try a burn at 8x and see if the freezing persists.

If some of those backups you are re-ripping are on TDK cmags, then that can cause some trouble as well. If you are ripping crap, then you'll be burning crap. Post back that MID code/s from those Tdk dash backups.

Also take that backup target back up to 4360 mbs in DVD Shrink. This is some top quality media, unless you got a bad batch. MCC-004 full hubs, I have not tried yet. The MCC-003 +8x verbatim full hub inkjet printables a very good.

As stand alone players age, their reading ability can diminish. After time, they'll start showing those freezing issues. Once you test out some of those verbatim +16x backups, burned at 8x-If that issue still shows up-it may need a hard disc lens cleaner ran through it. That cleaning disc is the last resort, before drive replacement.

The main thing: The Dvd burner must be able to play it's own backups, and they should look near original in quality. After that, the stand alone players come into play. You need to confirm those backups are ok,using the Digital Max burner to play them.

Awesome, thank-you.

I will first try ripping at 8x, raising that target size, and watching the movie on the original burner again, it's usually worse on there though, it would skip to a whole different chapter sometimes. I notice that DVDInfo reports no errors with my good burns, and reports around 47 errors on my bad discs. Do I take any value at what DVDInfo reports? I will have to research that UDMA thing.

I've long since stopped using those TDKs after reading these forums and I'm relieved to know that the brand I'm now working with is quality, at least that's one variable I can eliminate. I'm dusting through these quick w/experiments but if I can fix this it will be worth 2 spindles.

Many many many thanks.
