I have DVD Shrink and Nero. I've burned movies before, however only on DVD5 discs. I just got some DVD+R DL discs, and wanted to burn a movie. If I'm not wrong, I should be able to fit the entire movie, including everything else (menu, extras, etc.) without having to do any compression since DL discs are the same as the discs the original movies are on. What do I need to do on DVD Shrink to change the settings to DVD9 discs. And, do I just hit copy after that, or do I still reauthor? Thanks.

if you go to preferences from one of the tabs at the top you should be able to change the disc size .See picture below:

do you need to have a specific "dual layer" dvd burner? or can you burn DL discs using a regular dvd burner?

Any Dual Layer DVD burner *should* work. Just set shrink to DVD-9 as shown in the above post. Rip it and it will ask for a disc. Put in a DL disc and it should back-up with everything.

Good luck!

I mean does it have to be labeled a dual layer dvd burner?

Your drive should be listed as a Dual Layer Dual Format drive...some drives can write to DL media through firmware updates, but not all of them.

@ omar1,

The faceplate does not have to be labled as such. The drive just has to be capable of handling DL discs.

If I remember it correctly, a DL drive will make an intitial burn on the first layer at a certain angle. At the end of that burn, the laser will shift angle and make a second pass. If an older drive is capable of this and all it takes is a firmware update, as LOCOENG said, then do that to get the most out of your current drive.

Other than that, get a new drive, ensure that the firmware is up to date so that it supports the greatest number of blank disks and that the burning program supports your drive.

And to think, PnP was to make things easier.

Major problem. My drive is dual layer compatible. Now, here's what I did. I placed the original disc in the writable drive and then I opened DVD Shrink and clicked on open disc. After the analysis was complete, the files showed up. I went to preferences and I changed to DVD9-8.5. Then, since I shouldn't have to re-author anything, I simply clicked on full disc. After this, the encoding started, and then Nero opened about an hour later, and ejected the original disc out and asked for a blank disc. I put in a blank DVD+R DL disc and the burning started. At the very end of the process, when Nero said "Writing to lead-out", the disc popped out as if it were done. But for some reason Nero freezed. I took the disc, put in my DVD player. For some reason, on some of the parts, the disc is freezing. Why did this happen? I even tried it in my other DVD player and the same freezing is happening. I'm not sure if the burn process never completely finished, or if something else is causing this. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

@poje123

Just curious as to why you would use DVD Shrink at all for a DL backup? The simplest solution would be to rip via DVD Decrypter's ISO read mode and then select the MDS file created to burn in ISO write mode (with either DVDD or Imgburn)....make sure to select the MDS file as it contains the layer break information.

This should give you a 1:1 copy, and no program will give you a better DL burn than DVD Decrypter/Imgburn.

poje123,
The problem you are having is because of the blank D/L disk you used. If I was going to do a D/L movie I would use DVDDecrypter in .iso mode. IMHO it finds the layer break correctly. Did you burn it at 2.4 or 4X. You really need to try Verbatim D/L disks as they as the best on the market now

Car.Mike, thanks for the info. The only reason I used DVD Shrink was because that's the only software I am really familiar with. I do have DVD+R DL discs that are by Verbatim. Is there any way you can kind of guide me on how to use DVD Decrypter to burn the movie? I just don't want to have that problem I mentioned above because I don't want these discs to go to waste since they are so expensive. If anybody else could help it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Get DVD Decrypter here: http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/software.htm
Get Imgburn here: http://imgburn.com/index.php?act=download

Insert your original DVD into the DVD drive and open DVD Decrypter. Under Mode, choose ISO read...this will rip the disc to your HDD. Once the ripping is finished, close DVDD and open Imgburn. Remove the original disc and insert your blank DL DVD. Under mode make sure you have selected write...in the main screen labeled source, click on the icon of a folder->browse to the MDS file created by DVDD->under the section labelled destination choose your burner->Choose your burn speed (2.4X for starters)->Click on the big arrow pointing at the disc and kickback and wait on your burn to complete. Simple.

Do I need to use Imgburn, or can the whole DL burning process be done on simply DVD Decrypter?

DVDD can be used for both ripping and burning, I just suggested Imgburn because it is still being updated, whereas DVDD is not. It is actually the same burn engine.

Then if I just want to use DVD Decrypter only, what's the process. I mean first to rip the DVD I would put DVD Decrypter in ISO read, but then once the ripping is complete, what do I do to burn the movie? Thanks LOCOENG.

@poje123

Since you said you have Nero then another option would be to open Nero and chose copy dvd option and the Nero express opens and you copy onto dvd dl disc at 1:1 . I tried the Decrypter route and my success was not good in ISO read and write and I don't know why. You'll have to have AnyDVD to use Nero tho.

So, let me get this straight. You're saying that just using DVD Decrypter to do a DL burning didn't work well for you? You're saying I can use Nero, but with AnyDVD. What about the other option that LOCEONG mentioned above about using DVD Decrypter and then using Imgburn? Where can I get AnyDVD?

poje123,
When you do a D/L disk you want the program to be able to find the original layer break. Nero and Shrink do not use the original Layer break. DVDDecrypter does so use that program. I can not tell you why Garmoon had problems doing a D/L w/ DVDDecrypter but I have done over 70+ D/L dvd ( using Verbatim D/L blank media) and have not had any failures

@Car.Mike

I only tried Decypter in ISO once for last week's Goblet of Fire. The trouble came at the layer break, the disc froze, on all pc players and standalones in the exact same place. I had no trouble with Nero Express which is supposed to have issues at the layer break; go figure! It was the first time I'd burned with Decrypter for any disc.

1. From the "Mode" menu, select "ISO" > "Read".

2. Put DVD-9 movie disc in drive.

3. Notice where DVDDecrypter is going to save the file. It is usually saved to the C:Drive in the name of the movie

4. Click the big "Decrypt" button.

5. After it finishes reading now take the DVD-9 movie disc out of the drive.

6. Go to "Mode" > select "ISO" > "Write".

7. Put a blank double layer disc in your DVD burner.

8. Click the little folder icon - "Browse for source file" - and select the MDS file that DVDDecrypter created that is on the C: Drive

9. Click the big 'Write' button.

Now you can use Imgburn during the write phase. You will use the same steps above as it was written by the same author.

If you want to use AnyDVD to help DVDDecrypter w/ the new encryption you will have to set up DVDDecrypter a little differently but if you will PM me I'll give you the directions as the Duke Game just started

I forgot to ask one thing. Do I need to set DVD Decrypter to let it know that I want to do a dual layer burn? I mean, like on DVD Shrink you go to preferences and change from DVD5 to DVD9. Do I have to do something like this on DVD Decrypter?
