Hi everyone,

This problem has been bothering me for ages and only now am I sick enough of it to ask how to fix it.

I installed the latest msn messenger (7.5) and all is good. However whenever I start my system, somewhere (which I cannot find) messenger version 4.7 also starts and automatically signs in. So, I have the old version and the new one running at the same time. My girlfriend uses this machine as well so its her account that signs in automatically on the older version.

I went to control panel, searched for any version of msn installed (other than 7.5) and couldn't find any. I then chose to add/remove windows components and removed msn messenger from there, but it still remains.

I'm stumped. Any ideas would be much appreciated,

Thanks.

to remove Windows Messenger manually, click Start, Run and enter the following command:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

if you still have not gotten rid of messanger 4.7 try this,it work for me.
click start then click on disk clean up after the scanning process is done, then a set up for deleting files will come up,click on more options, then click on window componets, scroll down to the bottom of list and uncheck windows messanger and then click next, then a message will come up saying "are you sure you want to preform these actions, click yes.
that will take care of ur problem,u may have to restart ur computer.
if that dosent work let me know and we can try something els, from joe69c

Click start > run > msconfig and look at the start up tab, uncheck msn 4.7 from the start up list.

@rav: unfortunately, that doesn't always work with messenger clients. As long as the startup option is set in the program itself, it could keep adding itself back to the startup list.

Actually rav009 is correct. It can't add itself to the startup file if it doesn't run. This is the way that I have disabled Windows Messenger for many years, as well as various other things that tend to start up automatically...

Should work ,however start up entires are created but if your do not run it from start up it will not return, ms anti spyware tells me now and aggain that "avdpack.dll has created new start up entrie, signed by Microsoft Corp, action allowed" however the program will not run from start up...as its disabled.

The method csubi mentioned seems to have worked. I did however try to use the msconfig utility mentioned, however I cannot seem to find it. It isn't reconised when typed into the run dialogue. I looked in Windows and windows/system32 to no avail.

I'm running XP Pro by the way, service pack 2.

Your telling me that when you type "msconfig" into run it isnt found?

You need to get them back, a virus may have deleted them most likely, regedit, task manager and msconfig can be found here..

http://www.dougknox.com/

click xp utilities and then Create Emergency Copies of Critical XP System Utilities (Regedit, MSConfig and Task Manager)
Quote:
This small VB 6 utility will create a usable backup copy of Taskmgr.exe, MSConfig.exe and Regedit.EXE in a new folder, called C:\EmergencyUtils. The new copies will be named Copy_of_Taskmgr.exe, Copy_of_MSConfig.exe and Copy_of_Regedit.com.

These programs are extremely helpful, and usually necessary in helping to rid your computer of a viral infection. Many virus programs will intercept these programs, based on their original file name, and prevent them from running. The alternate copies will not encounter this problem. Simply navigate to the C:\EmergencyUtils folder and double click the file you need to run.

To use: Download the xp_emergencyutil.zip file and save it to your hard drive. Double-click the xp_emergencyutil.zip file and extract xp_emergencyutil.exe to your hard disk. To run the EXE just double click it, there is no installer. You will have the option of running the programs automatically, after the copies are created.

NOTE: Your antivirus software may warn of a potentially malicious script. This is normal, as the Windows Scripting Host is used to create the "copies" of these 3 utilities.

Operating Systems: Windows® XP and Windows® Server 2003 only. Requires VB 6 Runtime Libraries, included in Windows® XP.

I did a search for the filename msconfig.exe and it was found in the i338 directory and the service pack 2 files directory.

MSN was gone from the previous attempt I tried when I used this utility. Thanks everyone for your input, very much appreciated.

Cheers!
