For some reason, my recordings take less time with the 8x than with 16x discs. I'm using CloneDVD and the recording time is set to "maximum". Isn't this backwards of how it should be?
that depends on the firmware you currently have for the burner, if your firmware is not up to date, you could very well be burning your 16x media at a MUCH slower speed because it's not recognized properly~ :) while your 8x rated media IS...
also, depending on the quality of your media, you might want to keep your speeds down for less errors~ :) but this is a firmware issue, not a speed issue...

Download the exe file-remember where it goes/close everything out and open up the exe file and follow the installation instructions to the T. Make sure no lightning storms are nearby,and that litey drive is empty,no disc in the tray.
It may speed up the burning for you?
The other drive,the firmware is A05A,but I'm not sure of who made that drive.
I'm also curious about the brand name and format of your 8x and 16x blanks.
I agree with kiv and saugy. Firmware update will most likely solve your problem. On a sidenote, your dvdrw drive will only burn up to 8x so burn times should be comparable with both 8x and 16x media after the f/w update.
I updated the firmware on both drives as suggested. They are both buring at relatively the same speed even though Drive E is a 16X burner. The media I'm using is HP and Phillips.
HP and Philips uses some pretty crappy manufacturers. Cmags and Philips are a couple of them. Try to find the MID code from them.If they turn out to be cmags or philips,then you may have to keep the burn speed slowed down anyways.
Firmware is the program that controls the write strategy for each media,in certain burners.Each Blank disc has an MID code,and the programming in the fw tells that drive how fast to burn it,and the increments of burning it. Burner manufacturers have their drives tested with different brands of media and newer ones that come out. After reviewing their performance,they put it all together have a newer fw version.A lot of the time,the lower quality manufactures have more problems even at their rated speed,so the manufacturers will have that fw set to burn at their recommended speed.
If you want to step up that burn speed,I suggest some quality Verbatim 16x media.This media is very good and scans better on my benqs with the faster burn speed.
The opposite can occur also. Take sony 1x-8x plus media.In my benq 1620s,I can overburn them at 16x if I desired. Every 8x speed media I have used can be burned at 12x and 16x on my benqs. It's all about firmware.
Another thing that may slow you down,see if you have 40 pin/40 wire ide ribbon or 80 pin/40 wire ide ribbon. You need the 80 wire/40 pin.
