Hi guys
I just purchased a 2nd hand PS2 & it only has PS1 controllers. Are the
PS2 controllers any different as they look the same to me. I tried a friends PS2 controller on V8 Super cars 2 & I preferred my old ones as the X button seemed to work with less pressure.

the PS2 has a dual shock 2 controller which has pressure sensitive buttons. the PS1 controller is simply on/off in reference to button depression.

color is irrelevant they (Dual Shock 2) come in black and purple from Sony and there are numerous aftermarket versions as well, a DS2 controller will have it printed on it and will work in a PS1 without problems, but a non DS2 controller will not function correctly on a PS2 if the game has pressure sensitive options. games that are not designed to use these options will work perfectly with a PS1 controller.

I opened up the both of them, and compared, but no difference. The only difference, to me, is that the colours r different.

Who would you employ?

A) David with advanced certifications
B) Adam with advanced hands-on experience
C) A Geek

comments like that really show off your ignorance.

From Sony
Quote:
The DualShock analog controller is a controller capable of providing feedback based on the onscreen action of the game (if the game supports it), or Vibration Function. The controller is called Dual Shock because the controller has two vibration motors: a weak buzzing motor (like cell phone or pager vibration), and a strong rumble motor.

The Dualshock II adds two additional vibration levels, is considerably lighter and all of the buttons (except for the SELECT, START, ANALOG mode, L3 and R3 buttons) are pressure sensitive. Many games support the pressure sensitive buttons, such as Square Enix's The Bouncer, SCEA's Gran Turismo 4, Fresh Games' Mad Maestro, various racing games, and the PS2 Metal Gear Solid and Grand Theft Auto installments. However this feature is not considered crucial in determining game design for the PS2.
the Dualshock 3 for the PS3 will incorporate Bluetooth technology and be wireless.

The PS1 controllers don't generally work for newer PS2 games. I've tried for games like Gran Turismo 4 and Dynasty Warriors 5, but they didn't work. The do work with A LOT of PS2 games, still, although some have problems (when I tried with Need For Speed Underground only analog worked).

It's Festivus for the rest of us!

It might just be me but my PS1 controllers have shorter cords than my PS2 ones.

Flip the ends over and look at the pin outs. They are different big time. So yah some PS2 games won't work with PS1 controls. Monster Hunter 2 (Jap) version will not load unless you have a PS2 controler hooked up. But Monster Hunter (USA) will load with a PS1 controler.
