hi,

I currently have a memorex true 8x dvd burner and have been backing up dvd's successfully for sometime. I am able to back up original dvd's however when I need to make a copy of a back up I get a read error. Something along the lines of "read error occurred with vob 1 file." In the past I was able to just ignore the errors (although a pain and hassle) because the copies would still work but as of late they are not working in my stand alone dvd player. I am able to get to the menu page but if you go to select a scene or play the movie it freezes up.

I use dvd shrink to rip and nero to burn it and on rare occasions I have to use dvddecrypter.

Please help, thanks.

use better media to backup your dvds in the first place will help(please dont tell me your using memorex blank media)

use Taiyo Yuden and or Verbatim and burn at a slower speed (4x) will enable you to make copies of your backups using Nero "on the fly" or DVD Decrypter ISO read ISO write

the best way to backup a backup is program wise. that works for me is ashampoo, blind write, nerojust hit disk copy and depending on your system preformace i have a p4 1.7 intell 512 ddr2 rm 160gb7200 rpm segate hd and in about 10 min i have a great backup also make sure that you use good media for your backup, that ddose make a big difference and what speed you burn at i always burn at 4x or less hope this will help also make sure that you use a optic cleaner like a disk with fiber brush to clean off your laser eye that will help

Okay, I'll try burning it at a lower speed from now on. I tend to do it at the maximum speed it allows me because it already takes me forever to backup an original (roughly 2 hours) and a backup of a backup (40 min).

But is it strange that some movies that are burned at the maximum, for me I'm assuming 8x, are not a hassle (mind you they are few and far between) and others are? And another thing I don't get is the movies I can't back up have no problem being backed up at a friends place.

aabbccdd: No I have only used memorex media once. That was the one that came with the burner. I've used a variety; Fujifilm, HP, TDK, Sony. I guess now I know they're bad.

rdmercer1: thanks I'll try those programs. Isn't the ashampoo program for compressing and burning to a cd? Or does it not matter?

One final question on average how long does it take you guys to backup?

Thanks for the help I really appreciate it guys.

efer i use CloneDVD 2 with AnyDVD and can backup a movie in like 20 minutes 11 to 12 mins. for shorter movies 25 to 30 mins. for longer movies (doing the movie only)

Fujifilm and Sony both are pretty good media using the DVD+R format thats (MIJ)

make sure your burner is in DMA mode NOT in PIO mode if your having slow rip times and burn times .you can fix that in device manager or use this guide

http://bbmayo.home.comcast.net/

sound like you have some other issues with your machine maybe . whats your PC specs.??

aabbccdd: That site you mentioned was pretty good. I checked the DMA/PIO mode thing and found out my secondary IDE controller was set on PIO. Don't know how much of a difference that will make. I don't have any movies on hand to check for any difference made.

I have been using DVD - R instead of +R, does that make a difference? I am thinking of just getting another burner and setting this memorex one on fire. Any advice on which to get? I'm thinking about a Pioneer.

My specs are AMD Athalon, 1.2GHZ, 512MB ram, 40gig hard drive.

I suspect its something else as well. I thought it might have been a virus/spyware. I run a virus scan and spyware scan weekly, assuming they are working properly, that is not the problem.

efer ,looks like your at the bare minumin with your PC specs ,but it should work make sure you shut down all other programs when burning . you need to get your drive back in DMA mode ,use that guide i posted.also make sure your machine is clean (disc clenup and defragging often at least once a week)

using DVD dash R media should be fine thats what i use but as said use the good stuff (Taiyo Yuden and or Verbatim)NO MEMOREX !!!

as far as burners go i like the Plextor PX-716A which i have but there a liitle more money than most burners other brands to consider are Lite-On ,BenQ all three are top notch Plextor being the best.Pioneer are good drives also but most of them arent unable to booktype which you may want to do if you start using the DVD plus R media
