Open up Nero Start Smart and select "Burn DVD-Video files" and burn the folder at 4x. Enjoy!

Which version of Nero are you using? Nero should auto burn with shrink - the only version that doesn't support this is 6.6.1.4. In edit>preferences>file i/o tab make sure 'enable burning w/ Nero' is checked. When you click back up under 'select backup target' make sure your burner is picked.

Which Lebowski is this? The original DVD release or the special edition (the gold cover or the black cover)? I had an issue with the new release DVD but was never able to resolve it for logistical reasons.

The movies you get from Netflix you watch, right? You don't copy those because that's illegal and against forum rules to discuss anything about it, right?
The only way I'd suggest someone to stay with -R discs is if their players (and their friends' players, just in case you wanna bring over a movie) are compatible with them. If not, and you have some compatibility issues, go for +R. Not only is it newer and newer DVD player models can read 'em, you can set them to Rom--something you can't do with -R.

I had no luck with +R with Nero, so stuck with -R. Both my players are dated, so some play on both, some on just one. Oh well, better upgrade one of these days. What do you mean by setting it to ROM? Is that a selection on the players setting?
Thanks

I'm sure it can be done in Nero (I don't use it regularly) but you can set the 'booktype' to Rom--the format that commercial DVDs are written, hence their universal playability (regardless of how new or old a DVD player is).
+R's are the only ones capable of being written as Rom. -R cannot.
Depending on which drive you have, and the firmware, you can do this.
I know Liteon, BenQ and a couple of others can do it. Booktyping it to Rom has been the best thing I've done since I started backing up my movies.

Wht brand of discs are you using for +r and the -r? Most drives now a days are dual format but maybe yours isn't. Another reason your players may not play the discs is because of the blanks and/or burn speed.
Post back the make and model of your drive and we can see what it can do and how to get this discs playing for you.

I was using some off the wall brand, gave them away, so not sure. then used K Hypermedia for the crash that only plays one one player. now i'm using staples (all -R). The burner that would not burn +R was an IO max. it broke and now I have a Sony DW 030A. I have not tried +R on this burner. Will have to buy some and try it again.
couldn't figure out how to set to rom??? in preferences it is checked to check for correct format. Thanks for all your help.
Also my burn just failed at 8x, so am trying it at 4x. why does that happen>? should I always use 4x? BTW I use Nero 6.6.0.16. Should I update? does it cost?

Eck!! That media your using! No wonder you have burn failures and playback problems :)
You can update your Nero to this version of 6 - this version will still auto burn with shrink:
http://httpdl2.usw.nero.com/Nero-6.6.0.18.exe
If you want 7 than yep gotta pay but let's sort this all out b/4 considering Nero 7. Nero 6 still does a good job! So post your last Nero log to see if anything else is going on besides the media and we can go from there.
It will be located on your hard drive - program files>ahead>Nero>nerohistory.text. Make sure you edit out the serial # - begins w/ something like 1A or 1C. Also the logs are separated by this:
====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======

Sure go ahead and up date. I don't think your problems have anything to do with the Nero version. Here's what I do see:
Quote: Recorder: <SONY DVD RW DW-Q30A> Version: YYS3
Just 1 version behind on the firmware - the latest is YYS4 - so update that to help with the media. Here's a link:
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2239Quote: Disc Manufacturer: FUJIFI - LM03
Fuji are okay not the best for sure. Switch to Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim. In store look for Verbatim or made in Japan only Fuji, Sony or Maxell.
The firmware update may help w/ the Fuji media you are using now.
Quote: DVD-Copy on the fly
Turn this option off. It's part of the reason your having failures. Your drive isn't able to read the source disc so your burn is failing.
Quote: Error reading data
Any little glitch throws buring on the fly off - then bang burn failed and you have another coaster! Make sure the discs are clean also. This can throw the reading off.
Try this and let us know how it turns out!

No need to feel ignorant! Better to ask. Here's a simple explanation of firmware - it's a software/instruction that 'teach' your drive read and write strategies of media. Some will also unlock more features/burn speeds for your drive.
For 'burn on the fly' in Nero if doing a copy to copy (what it looks like from your log) it would be the 'quick copy' option.

I downloaded the firmware and saved it. should i be afraid of the warning:
These pages are only for advanced users. Bad flashing could destroy your drive definitively. Read carefully the installation notes of your firmware before you upgrade. The Firmware Page and the drive manufacturer can't be responsable on REMEMBER: This is at your own risk!!!!
i will wait to install it. let me know. thanks bud.

Flashing can do that if not done right - but it's really not that hard.
Make sure you have constant power, other programs are not running and no discs are in the drive.
Then open the .exe file. Now flash the drive - takes less than a minute or so. When finished reboot and bam updated. Total time less than 5 mins.

Not a problem! See firmware update is not so bad:) May or may not have helped the Fuji media though.
Now try switching to the media recommended and hopefully all will be good!
Let us know how it turns out!
