This is the second time I have done this.
Let me start off and say everything works fine under Windows ME. After I update to Windows XP my sony DVD-R drive will not regognize my DVD's. It thinks it is a audio disc and therfore will not play the DVD. All the drivers are updated and tells me the drive is working. All other software and hardware under XP seem to be working fine. I am at a lost, any clue how I can fix this.

Define update? Did you upgrade to XP, or do a fresh installation?

Ouch.

If you haven't installed too much already, or need to backup some things, I'd suggest you do so. Then, using the XP CD, do a full installation. You can do this with the upgrade CD, it will ask you for a previous version of Windows. All will work except for Windows 95.

Do a new installation. Upgrading, which may seem easier, brings problems with it.

Tried doing a new full install of XP last night still same problem. Put in DVD (E.T., Glory) in DVDR-W drive, XP will read it as an audio disc. Will read other kinds of disc just not DVD's.
Reason why I am trying to get XP to work is I have a program that will only work under XP and I can no longer watch movie trailers on the internet with Windows ME. Otherwise I would just stick with ME.

If it's possible, try to get another system to read the drive as a DVD. You might also want to look into get the latest firmware update for the drive from the manufacturer's website.

If all that fails, and the drive is still new...RMA it.

I fixed my problem. Powerdvd would not read my DVD's. All I needed was a updated version of Powerdvd. Version 3.0 would not work but version 4.0 would. I also got a new patch for Powerdvd 4.0
Reason my drive would read my DVD's as audio files is because they really were audio disc and not DVD's, my bad.
Anyway problem fixed just needed to update to at least version 4.0 of Powerdvd if anybody else has the same problem with running DVD's with Windows XP.
