I just got set up to burn some backups of my DVD collection and my drive will not recognize the blank DVD-R. I bought Comp-USA 4X DVD-R's. 100 pack was 20 bucks. Reading some other forums this may be the problem.
I have a dell that came with the DVD-RW. It is a TEAC DVD+RW DV-W58E. It recognizes CD-R's just fine. Could these DVD-R's I got need to be formatted? Even so I do not get a format option when right clicking on my drive.
@remusny
I would say it's the CompUSA discs - not good stuff or made by a quality manufacturer. Buy the good stuff - instore look for Verbatim or made in Japan Fuji,Sony or Maxell. They run sales on these brands all the time at Best Buy, Staples etc. (if in the US)
Also make sure your drives firmware is up to date. If you are running XPSP2 to see what version you have- in device manager look here (it will be in the far right You can then search by your model # here and see if there is a recent update:

@Noqoilpi
Good point!!! I assume (& we all know that saying) dual format. So yep that's why they aren't recognized!
So remusny you need +r - still buy the good stuff (not compusa brand) but in +r format.
PS Thanx for the post I had forgotten about my rebate. I just bought 200 last week. Have to fill up my new Sony DVP-CX995V DVD Player. I was looking for some kind of storage for my DVD collection when I happened on this bad boy. It holds 400 DVDs.
Some good and bad. You are just rolling the dice. I did the same thing back when I first started. I was in a hurry to burn so I went to the store and bought some crap on the self. I was lucky.
You should buy online. Someone has a deal all the time many with free shipping.

Or run your own search on Blank DVD Media.
Look for Ritek, Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden
