I've recently purchased a secondhand ps2 thats modded,I'm not sure about what kind of chip but the owner said he got it chipped in late 2002. Anyways it doesnt boot backup dvds all the time and i have to keep reseting it. CD backups work fine and occasionally i can boot a dvd first time but sometimes the game freezes and its really annoying if i couldnt save before it froze. Do you think it's a problem with the modchip or a problem with the laser?

You get what you pay for when it comes to getting second hand modded PS2's like that. As of 2002, direct boot of PS2 backup games was a fantasy, so probably whatever chip you have required a reset or two to boot backups. What's the Media ID of the discs you're using?

91. Q. What is the Media ID of a DVD and how can I find it?
A.The Media ID of a DVD is the true measure of it's quality. It contains prerecorded info about the disc's manufacturer. The quality of the disc will vary depending on the media code. The media code isn't visible on the disc or the packaging. To check the media ID, Open DVD Decrypter, insert your disc, and check what it says under Media ID or Manufacturer ID. You can also use a program called DVD Identifier which is very useful. You can find it here: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_id...

That makes sense since all my backups work on my friends ps2 which was modded recently. The media ID is PRINCO, i bought a bundle ages ago and they were the only discs i had left. I guess the problem is the modchip coz the game i recently burned worked on my friends ps2 and it wont boot at all on mine.

Maybe. Princo is shite. You should get some Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim to make sure it's not the media. That's still a good possibility in my opinion. 90% of time when people blame the hardware, it's something else.

I think my ps2 is modded with a messiah chip. I'm planning on getting some verbatim discs so i can burn FFXII, i've been waiting ages for the game to come out and i don't want it to be freezing all the time like it did with FFX-2.

Yeah I burned my copy of the FFXII Demo to RitekG05 and it plays fine. I burned the Japanese version to Yuden000T02 bookyped to DVD-ROM and it plays fine as well. Now just have to wait on the US version in August. Good media could well reslove the issue, if not, then look into the hardware.
