hello;

i run an old g4 powerbook with and external lacie dual layer burner. until now, i've been able to rip just about anything with mac the ripper but i've run into a problem recently with an encrypted dvd. i live in switzerland, so i'm not sure if european css is different than other countries - just an estimation. i've tried compressing the file (dvd2onex says it's an encrypted file and cannot perfom the operation) i've tried ripping the file and copying directly onto a dual layer dvd but the dvd ends up completely pixelated. in shorit, i've tried just about evrything. the only option left is fast dvd copy, but unfortunately their software doesn't support my external drive. so more or less my question is whether this is a lost cause, or if somebody knows if there is another more powerful decryption program out there or if i'm doing something wrong.

any feedback would be much appreciated

If you are burning to a DL compression shouldn't be needed, what brand blanks are you using? FYI, DVD are distributed in Regions (1,2 etc.), 1 being the US 2 being maybe Japan or England (don't really know any others but mine..LOL), each region may or may not have different levels of encryption on their DVD's...your problem doesn't sound like a copy protection problem, but rather something else...such as burning too fast, not using quality media, multitasking during the burn, etc.

i took your suggestion and burned a dvd region 2 (encrypted) with no other apps running and it worked just fine. then i took the dvd in question and tried to compress it and this time around DVD2OneX gave a decrytion error, so it's definitely something with the encryption on this particular dvd. anybody have any ideas?

DVD Shrink is a good compression tool and it's free.

Get it here: http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/software.htm

unfortunately i run a mac, so DVD Shrink is out as an option. further, it's not so much a compression issue as a rip issue, and i found something interesting: the dvd in question is part of a box set and i've tried to burn the third disk with success. i'm thinking this means the dvd's themselves are flawed. in fact, the first few times i tried to rip the first two cd's, i got a bad sectors error, but after ripping them with my external i no longer got this warning. is it a dvd issue or a software issue? could i repair the dvd with software or is it a lost cause. further, i've heard mtr 3 will be rolling out soon. anybody have any information about that?

Not entirely true...lately some box sets have been found to have only one disc in the set having some butt kicking protection on it. Forgot about you using a MAC, which I know virtually nothing about...I'm afraid I'm out of ideas for you. Good luck.
