Is their different quality Maxell Media out there?? My disk identifier is saying that its Ritek R03-02's. The junkie memorex I was using had that same identifier on it. Whats up??

Those maxell and memosux +8x spindles you have are manufactured by the same corp, Ritek. You got lucky with the memosux riteks. Memosux does use a ton of cmag media.
To be more specific on those maxells,you picked up a spindle that was made in taiwan. If you encounter Made in Japan on the wrappers of the +8x,then you could have yielded Maxell-002-00,which are manufactured by Hitachi.
Some other brands that use Ritek-R03 as their manufacturer:
Office Depot's house brand of +8x
Fuji +8x,on some of their made in taiwan.
And a hole lot more.
Most brand name media outsource their media to many different manufacturers.I stick with the higher quality mafacturers like Taiyo yuden/Mitsubishi Chemical Corp/ and Ritek/Hitachi.
Ritek-R03 media should be very good.

Well..the memorex ones that I have can't burn anything right. So when I got the Maxells and saw that they had the same Identifier, it kinda scared me since everyone on here recommends maxell. Maybe memorex's version of R03 sucks...cause I couldn't burn anything good on them. So far ok with maxells. But aren't they the same disk if they both have the same identifier?

The MID code identifies the type of disc and the dye used so that the drive firmware can apply the correct laser power and pulse rate. All discs using that type of dye and format will have the same MID code. The production code is the number laser printed or ink-jet printed on the disc. It identifies the production lines and dates of manufacture for each disc, and each disc is unique. The stamper code appears around the inner ring--one for CD-R/RWs, two for DVD+/-R/RW if the factory applies a code for the dummy blank on top. If there is no stamper code for the blank, then there is just one stamper code. Under the same MID code you will find every disc has a different production code and many have different stampers.
What model drive do you have and what version of firmware? What do you mean when you say the Memorex ones don't burn right? If the MID codes are the same, including the version types, your drive is applying the same laser power and pulse rates to both.

What it comes down to, is that the Maxells and memorex's with that identifier does not burn well for me at all. That identifier being Ritek R03's ... I have a HL-DT-ST GSA 4163B and I have current firmware. Its the media, its sucks. All my verbatims work great. And my Sony's and some Fuji's. I will just stay clean of all others.

The GSA-4163 with firmware version A104 is incompatible with RITEK R03-02 8X DVD+R discs. Ritek R04-001 is a 16X DVD+R disc, but the LG GSA-4163 is not listed in the compatibility charts. Ritek R05 16X, however, is compatible with the drive. If LG updates the firmware to include Ritek R03-02 MID codes, those discs will work properly and suck no longer. Does the quality change? No. Only the compatibility. If you have found discs that are compatible, use them instead. Save the Maxells and Memorex discs until the next firmware update and check again. You may find that they work then.

I also have the LG 4163B with A106 firmware and burn those Maxell MIT riteks perfectly. Very good media. No coasters for me. Update your firmware and you should be good to go.

I've probably burned 200 of the Maxell MIT's, I have never burned a memorex, and have no coasters with any of my Maxell DVD+R 8x MIT, booktyped to DVD-ROM. I have watched every backup and all are flawless.

I dont know If were talking about Maxell Mit's.. The ones I was trying to use were identified as Ritek-R03-02. Now the Maxells I have that are G04 are great.

The reason that MIT discs, whether Memorex, Imation, Maxell etc., are not recommended is that you don't really know what your are going to get. You might get Ritek or you might get CMC. Now if you are up to snuff on your media, you know what brand's speed rating (8X, 12X etc.) and format (+R or -R) is made by who. Not all Memorex are made by CMC, some are from a more reliable manufacturer such as Ritek...even though Ritek has fallen out of favor as of late. Verbatim, while made in Taiwan have even used CMC but are no longer using this practice, are made by MCC( Mitsubishi Chemical Corp) and is made in Taiwan and are the only branded discs that I would recommend from this part of the world.

All of the Maxell (MIT) = Made in Taiwan, that I have used coded out to
Ritek-R03-02
All have been the DVD+R 8x speed. Office Depot branded media of the same type and speed code out the same as well. I have burned about a hundred of them with no coasters.
I think that ADA Saugmon has probably burned thousands of these with no ill effects.

Well...I have the latest firmware, but I decided to install it again just to make sure I didn't get a bum install last time. And tried to burn the same movie on a Ritek r0302 disk that is maxell and this time it worked. Is it possible I had a bad firmware update?

i got couple hundred of Verbs and they
coded as MCC.
CMC is nowhere near same quality as MCC.

The MID code is in the stamper. When the substrate is molded, the wobbled groove as well as the ADIP (for DVD+R)and the land pre-pits (for DVD-R) are molded as well as the codes. After cooling, the dye goes on. CMC makes Verbatim's discs using the stampers Verbatim provides as well as the dye MCC provides. That means that CMC makes the Verbatim discs made in Taiwan. RICOHJPN is also a code on stampers Ritek uses to make those discs in Taiwan. They are not necessarily made in Japan. Over 90% of all optical media are manufactured in Taiwan.
There are many reasons why discs may not perform well. Quality is only one of them, and the only way to determine quality is to measure mechanical standards and electrical standards according to calibrated equipment.

Read through the lines: they never said WHERE they were made or who made them. MCC owns Verbatim. MCC makes the dye Verbatim uses. MCC makes no discs in Taiwan, yet the labels say, "Made in Taiwan." Look at DogBomb's excellent list and note that several brands supplied by CMC offer discs with MCC codes. They are all labeled, "Made in Taiwan." Verbatim is a leader in the industry; they developed the DL disc as well as several advanced dyes. They make their own discs and they have other factories make discs for them using their materials and specifications. CMC is the plant they chose in Taiwan, and that plant makes excellent discs for Verbatim. Unfortunately, the economic pressures on prices force CMC and some others to sell "B-grade" material rather than destroy it. (Kodak was one of the only companies that destroyed anything under their A-grade spec--and they had to get out of the CD-R manufacturing business.) B-grade and A-grade MID codes are identical: only the actual quality differs. Truly cheap discs from many suppliers are actually companies' B-grade material--and that can destroy the reputation of a company that is actually pretty good.
