Recently I posted a question about problems I was having burning Imation media and was told by members of this forum that Imation media was worthless. So I trashed the Imations and went back to my tried and true Verbatims. I recently bought a spindle of 50 Verbatims and just recently tried using them. I am using DVD Shrink with DVD Decrypter to burn. The burn completes and the message comes up that the burn was successful but when I put them in my player, I get the message that there is no disc. I have tried these DVDs in 3 different players and get the same message. I then tried one of my old blank Verbatims that I had left and it burned successfully and plays just fine. I have over the past couple of years probably burned over a 100 DVDs with maybe 3 or 4 coasters and now all of sudden I can't find a spindle that will play. Have they done something different with the media that is causing these problems? I don't understand why it would burn successfully and then not play. I can't afford to keep buying spindles of DVDs until I find one that will work. Is there any way to tell before you buy a spindle if it is a good batch of media? I am desperate here folks and badly need some advice. I have never had a bad burn with Verbatim discs before this spindle and now I just don't know what to buy. I would have thought it might have something to do with my burner or my players but the old spindle that I still have works fine and I have a bunch of RWs that I use all the time and they burn and play just fine. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

They are 16x DVD+Rs. I have never updated my firmware on my external burner. Could that make a difference in my old 4x blanks burning successfully and the new 16x blanks being coasters?

Your drive may not recognize the 16X DVDs until you update your firmware. Since your drive is an external drive, make sure it is connected to the PC via Firewire or USB 2.0. A USB 1.1 port (often the port on the front of a PC despite its being a "USB 2.0" computer) will not transfer data fast enough for recording DVDs. Before throwing out any media, try them first. Otherwise you are wasting your money based on hearsay.

What model drive do you have? What firmware version is it?

I updated my firmware today but haven't tried burning anything yet. I would imagine that is my problem. My burner is a Super DVD Iomega external drive and burns plus or minus DVDs. I have burned something like 100 DVDs with no problems until recently. I checked though and the blanks I have been using were 4X which is what my burner is. The new blanks are 16X and I imagine the errors are because I haven't updated the firmware. Iomega's site said that the firmware update should solve any problems with new media. I'll post my results as soon as I burn something. Hopefully that's the problem and the solution.

I want to thank all of you for your suggestions and advice. As I said in my earlier post, I updated my firmware. I just tried burning to one of the 16X Verbatims that I was having problems with and it burned perfectly. You were right, my firmware needed to be updated. I don't know what I would do without the wonderful and knowledgable people on the internet forums.
