I just bought some Sony DVD-R 8x MIJ ID: SONY08D1. The quality has been poor. Is it just a bad batch or are these generally poor discs?

kaity- These disc are normally excellent - Made by Taiyo Yuden for Sony in Japan even though they code out as sony . You could have gotten a bad batch possibly or perhaps you need to update your firmware ? Thar's two possible scenarios given the limited info you posted ! Perhaps your Sony/Taiyo disc are'nt bad just icompatible with the burner your using ! You might want to contact yje Manufacturer of your burner - Email their customer service for recommendations on what media to use if the burner did'nt come with a manual that had a media suggestion list . Sorry you had problems Good luck & hope you're burning bright soon Ciao!

The media code is SONY08D1. I purchased them at Circuit City. I have a SONY DVD RW DRU-800A with the latest firmware. When I backup movies and play them back, there are pauses throughout the movie. I scanned it with Nero and received a quality score of 93 on both movies I copied. I did the exact same copies with CMC disks and they ran flawlessly with quality scores of 95.

How fast did you burn those sony?
How fast did you burn those cmags?
Playback issues: On stand alone player or on the sony dru 800A- while you view them?
Some of this higher quality media, combined with quality drives may have to have that burn speed bumped up.

I first burned at 8x with Sony. Then tried 4x and the result was the same. I burned at 4x both times with cmags. Playback was on a stand alone Samsung player.
What is a good quality scan?

For some reason, dvdinfopro won't give me a score. I go by the PIF total. I just got my benq 1650 and tested out some burns. I did about a 3.5 gb movie on sony Yuden000-T02,which are the japanese sony +1x-8x. Results:
PIF total at 8x burn= 120 errors and that is excellent.
PIF total at 4x burn- 4033 errors with a huge/wide spike at the 2.8-3.1 gb mark that racked up about 3000 of those errors.Looks like a bad spot so I'll have to try some more tests.
Both played near original quality though. I will stick with 8x burning on my benq 1640 and 1650.
My verbatim +16x also scans better at the faster 8x and 12x speed. Most errors for me are at the 2.4x and 4x speed and making those backups un-rippable.
I booktype my media,so I don't use much dash media. I did burn several 100 of the Sony-08D1 japanese discs and they worked very good.Just a few stand alone players that my backups play on gives no disc errors with my dash backups.
The newest sony dash 1x-8x are coding as Ty-G02! They say look for the white/octagon spacer at the top of the spindle. The taiwanese will be gray/and round.
You may have ran into a bad area of that spindle. Try burning one that is closer to the bottom.
Another note: That sony dru 800A is a rebadged lite-on. You can download a utility to set that drive to booktype the plus format media to dvd-rom. Remember this in case you run into a stand alone player that doesn't recognize your plus or dash backups.

I don't know what PI's or PIF's mean, but using DVDinfo, I have:
PI total=3177
PI Feak=15
PI Average=7
PIF Total=232
PIF Peak=3
PIF Average=0
Quality Rating=98.72% versus 93 from Nero.
Regardless, there were way too many freezes throughout the movie and I just threw the disc away.
Thanks for the Lite-On info. I've never booktyped before, but I guess if it's better to booktype then I'll be getting the plus versions from now on.

Doesn't DVD Decrypter have a booktype function or do you need both?

yes you can use DVD Decrypter to set the booktype of DVD+R media to dvd-rom on drives that are capable of doing so but if there is a booktype utility available by the maker of your drive eg. lite-on booktype utility, benq booktype management utility, it's just as easy and sometimes better to use the utility provided by the maker of the drive. On some model drives you have to set DVD Decrypter to booktype to dvd-rom prior to every burn as with the utilities they will do it automatically once you set it to do so.

98% score?
200 or so PIF errors is very good. I'd look at that stand alone player as being the problem.
If you come across a $25-$30 player, I'd almost guarantee that I'd play those sony 08D1 backups perfect.

@kaity
A 98% score is excellent, yet you still got freezes? I wonder, are you putting paper labels on your backups?
I would agree with saugmon, that the player may be the culprit rather than the disc.

I received numerous errors with DVD-R. I didn't put any labels on the discs. I just tried it with Sony DVD+R TY. I haven't watched the whole movie, but it seems to run ok even though the quality scan was similar to the DVD-R, which had terrible results. I don't think it's the writer because it copies well with the CMC's. It's weird that a Sony writer using Sony disks, though repackaged, would give me so many problems. Hopefully it was just the batch, but I'll probably be buying DVD+R's from now on.
