all i know of... the O and X buttons are changed around (US - X is confirm, JAP - ) is confirm. im pretty sure UMD's are universal, so they can be read on ANY psp (correct me if im wrong). so pretty much ,theres no diff IMPO and knowledge.
for the buttons, you can change them around using PSPSet (which I did, cauz im used to O as confirm).

there was alot of talk about the screens when the psp 1st came out, some say the jap version has a sharp screen, while others have a samsung screen, and that the sharp screen was better, but im not to sure about it, its sort of like a psp myth...

mattallen, is right in terms of the screen being different, technically the jap one is supposed to be clearer. And with regards to playback on it: Games are not regionalised, so u can get an american game and play it on your jap psp. BUT, movies are regionalised, so jap psp's CANNOT play UMD's from america, they only play jap UMD movies, (i don't think they play european movies, but I may be wrong!)
This is no big deal as it's better to get a dvd version of a film. DVD=about £15, umd =£15. UMD, can only play on psp! But with a dvd it plays in a dvd player, pc, and can also be ripped so it can be put onto your psp memory card. A little more hassle, but worth it in the end, as the limitations of using a umd, personally, make it a waste of money in my opinion.!

Oh well it cant be a big difference, but has it got anything to do with dead pixels?

no it doesnt have to do with that
dead pixels is not a psp problem, its a common problem of lcd screens period.

I have a Jap version and I have compared it to my friend's US version and the truth they are both the same, I do not see a difference. I think it is all myth that there is a difference from the US and Jap versions.

its not a myth, its a fact.
they are two different screens and the japenese does have better quality screen.
its not big a big enough difference for ppl you don't kno what to look for!
stop saying its a myth.
its a fact.
just cause you don't notice the difference doesn't mean there isn't one.
