WM Player -"The source filter" message

Hi there i am having problems with Windows Media player, when i try playing an avi file i get the following message:

The source filter for this file could not be loaded.

I have tried uninstalling it and reinstalling but it doesn't work. By the way i am using windows media player 10 and have XP SP2 installed. Please can some help. Thank you.
