I have played a little bit with some ripping and encoding tools, so i'm not entirely a neophyte, but I still have a lot to learn. The following situation has me stumped.

I ripped an anime dvd with the intent of making a divx file out of it for later subbing. I Ripped the VOBs with smartripper and ran them through DVD2AVI. I have since tried a variety of different settings in VDub to tinker with the video quality as well as attach the sound file.

No matter what the settings have been I have ended up with the same result. The resultant file plays very nicely on my XP1800 system. However, when I try it on my old P2 266, the video plays in slow motion while the audio is fine.

Any ideas that might set me straight? In the meantime I'm continuing to run tests and try other settings. Thank you for any help or insight.

P2/266 is simply too slow to play DivX videos with high bitrates.

Yeah, unfortunately a lot of realizations sunk in about an hour after posting. I think it was one of those, "couldn't see the trees from the forest deals". I also realized that some of the digisubs I had watched had obviously been made in DIVX3 for me to have been watching them on the old P2. Thanks for getting back to though.

There's still hope tho'.. Try and install proggie called FFDShow from our site -- it improves the playback speed on slower machines pretty dramatically. Only 6months ago I had P2/350 and had similiar trouble what you're facing now (FFDShow didn't exist back then), which I tried to (and had some success as well) fix by lowering the screen size to 640x480 when playing the clips, killing all other apps off, etc..
