It all depends on brnad and model# of the burner and stand alone players that play your backups.

You'll have to find the right format that suits your needs-both burner drive and stand alone players.

First: Make sure it is quality media. That'll save you a lot of issues later on. Ty/Verbatim/Ritek/Sony/Maxell

second: Get a batch of plus and dash. You need to give both formats a chance. Maxells are pretty decent because you can get them at walmart in the 3/5/10 pks. Try to get the ones that say made in Japan on the wrapper.

Third: Burn a few, maybe even at different speeds and different formats. Get a sharpie and write that info on that disc-how fast burned/what programs/etc.

Fourth: Now test them in all the drives that you plan on playing your backups in. This includes Stand alone players/game consoles/and pc dvd drives.Your personal players/friends players/and family members players. Watch out for the No disc/Dirty disc/Wrong region/Wrong format error on those drives. That usually means they don't like that format off of your burner.

Fifth: Stick to the format the performs best. If you have a ton of drives, then there will be several that won't recongize them

That's the basic trial and error on your avg DVD-RW drive and compatability.

Now some drives support bitsetting. This bitsetting is also called booktyping. This alters the plus format, and turns it into the dvd-rom format, which is a more universal format. This is what I do on all 4 of my benqs and the stand alone compatability is superior than my dash backups.

After booktyping the plus format to dvd-rom,that makes the plus format superior. Not all drives support this booktyping. And most of the drives that don't booktype, usually the dash format is superior.

Drives that support booktyping, some with separate utility/burn program/ or hacked fw.:
Benq
Plextor
Lite-on
LG
Ricoh
Some sony
NEC/Pioneer with special hacked firmware.

wjwaters: What's the brand name and model# of your DVD-RW drive.
