Hi I have an ACER apire 3500 with the in built burner being Slimtype DVDRW SOSW-8335. The program I am using to decrypt is AnyDVD and I am burning with CloneDVD2. I have had this notebook since July 2005 and never had problems backing up my vast dvd collection. Out of the blue my dvd burner would only burn to 35% and then say 'bad media'.

Sounds easy but these 'bad medium'disks were my 100% successful mediums up until 3 months ago.

Have taken my notebook back to where I purchased it from and the techie checked it out saying the hardware and sofware for the burner were fine, he suggested the problem was a 'compatability' problem.

I tried uninstalling several programs and cleaned up my notebook heaps but still to no avail. Severe frustration gave me the initiative and drive to reformat my computer back to factory standards.

I have successfully done this and have installed the burning programs I was having success with, now my burner will successfully burn but only with a rare and exxy in price blank medium 'magmedia'.

Is there something else I can do to ressurect this devilish pain in the ass problem? Helpppppp

Mandy

Well, you lost me a bit at "a rare and exxy in price blank medium 'magmedia'.". I'm guessing that you're saying that you haven't had success with any other type of media besides this somewhat expensive kind (that I've never heard of, myself). Ok, so here's what I think the problem is:

It seems to me you're using media that isn't very reliable. The top two medias out there are Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim, and they certainly aren't much more expensive than lesser quality media, but they are most certainly worth every penny you pay for them. After that, Sony, Fuji, and Maxell are generally considered "third choice" media. They're all good media, especially Sony, which is just re-branded Taiyo Yuden, and Sony is something you can generally find on sale (it's on sale at Circuit City, at the moment).

I think that if you're using the latest firmware for your drive, and you're using quality media, you will see an end to your burning problems, especially if you're making sure you're not doing anything too major in the background (converting a movie qualifies as major, but even downloading can cause a burn to fail).

Good luck!

Magmedia is the brand name of the blank +dvd which is sold at Woolworths here in Australia. I have tried Laser, Sony, Sky and none of these work.
I keep hearing Verbatim is the best and will try that one next.

What do u mean by 'firmware' is that like the latest software updates for my burner???

i used to do lots of things on the net while burning as well and never had a complaint from my burner or ever had an error, just as time goes on it seems my errors increase.

Hard to explain really, better if u could see in person perhaps, THANKS for your help just the same!!!

Appreciate it heaps and will continue to take any advice offered!!

Cheers from Australia (east coast where Cyclone Wati is terrorising!)

hey cool (i think!) , you have Woolworths all the way over in Oz, i thought it was just a British store. anyways, try dvdinfopro (free) from www.dvdinfopro.com (choose the version with adverts) and run one or more of those discs thru dvdinfopro's media info check and paste results here..maybe we can go from there..

ps have teleported thread to the relevant forum. i dont's use clonedvd so can't help with that side of it. but as to a laptop drive lasting that long, i am surprised :)

@mandy1972: Creaky has also made a very good off-hand point, now that I think about it. He said he's surprised your drive has lasted as long as it has, and that very well could be your problem. But first, to answer your question, yes, firmware is a software based upgrade to a chip or chips inside your dvd drive (it's basically like a motherboard's bios, but designed specifically to tell your burner how to deal with whatever media is used with it). Firmware is important especially if you are using the most current media, as firmware updates will add information for those newer medias. Assuming your drive IS working properly, with current firmware, you should have no problem using any 8x media out there, since 8x media has been around quite awhile. 16x might pose more difficulty if your firmware hasn't been updated in awhile.

I'd be willing to take a guess that your drive MIGHT just be giving out on you, too... Unfortunately, I don't know any way to troubleshoot something like that. Maybe someone on the forums will, though, and can give you some steps you can use to test whether or not your drive is beginning to fail. However, if it won't consistently burn GOOD media (and Sony is definitely good media), there's a very good chance it's related to drive failure, but it could easily be a firmware issue, also. Okay, scratch that. I looked up your drive, which is a SOSW-833S, not SOSW-8335, by the way. ;) It does not have any firmware updates, which means you're pretty much stuck either getting a new drive, or hopefully finding some media the drive likes... I would stick with things that are slower/older, as there's a better chance your firmware will recognize it. 8x will PROBABLY work, depending on how old the laptop is...

Good luck!
