Here is a question for all Kazaa user experts!!!

When I downloading films or movie clips using Kazaa, I noticed that certain files can be play/view using the Kazaa theater without the file being downloaded completely (or in another word 'Preview' the file).

My questions are, how do I preview the file to see whether I have downloaded the correct ones? or is that impossible for certain file? and what does these files depends on to stop the download users to preview it?

Hello Super106, Kazaa theater will play "preview" most MPEG but NOT AVI. In the traffic screen, at the end of each file u r downloading u will c an extension like, .AVI, .EXE, and so on. If it says ".AVI" which is a very common type of movie/video file type, then u will need DIVX to view the movie. You have to goto your kazaa shared folder and find the movie, it will show as a DAT file, right click it and select OPEN WITH find divx and open the dat file. U can do it while the movie is downloading.

While what theos said will work for some files, most DIVX files would require that their indexes be corrected.

Anyway, the easy way to preview Kazaa files is to use KPE (http://ddsimoes.hpg.com.br/kpe/). KPE will 'fix' the video file, and then launch your default video player to watch the file.

If you have Kazaa Lite then it comes with a handy little program called AVI preview. it will extract the video information from the dat file and then play it

Just in my experience, AVI Preview is a lot less stable than KPE. That is, KPE can preview more files than AVI Preview can... At least in my experience.

Not having tried (or even known about) KPE, I shall bow to your superior knowledge.

So it is... I haven't upgraded to 1.2, and version 1.0 is not ad supported. You could probably do a google search to find the un-added 1.0 version.

That really dissapoints me... and here I thought so highly of KPE.

I downloaded KPE and it is NOT ad-ware, It has NOT tried to connect to the web at all.
The version is 1.2
Here is the site I downloaded it from.

theos,

Just to make sure i wasnt going mad I re-downloaded KPE from your link, during the installation I got this screen :-

That sure looks like ad-ware to me!!!

Just because it doesn't try to connect to the internet, doesn't mean its not ad-ware, it probably just waits until you connect yourself.

Try running the free version of ad-aware (http://www.lavasoft.de) and see if it comes up with anything.

WhenU/uSave/WeatherCast is not adware in the typical sense because it does not display ads in the client application (KPE). Instead, it installs WeatherCast, which WhenU says is a 'helpful' application that provides added value to the consumer. Really. Anyway, WhenU:

* WhenU offers and coupons save consumers hundreds of dollars a year.

* WhenU shows only very selective, relevant ads - the average is one ad per user, per day.

It only works when you are already online, and then it (essentially) just shows popups. It monitors your browsing for times when it can become 'helpful'. Anyway, check out www.cexx.org, as I think they have a workaround for WhenU.

get "adware 6.0. It will remove the registry keys. You can also remove the weather and usave junk. I did and it is just fine. No attemps to connect to the internet have been made on my PC.
I use zone alarm pro and it would have showed up. But, after reading your post I checked zone alarms programs that connect, and they have not tried. So, what I'm saying is if you need to preview dat's in Kazaa, then use KPE, if the adware issue can't be resolved for you, then use the old method, and right click the dat file, open with, choose the application and there you go.

I use KPE now, adware 6.0 remove the registry keys and I removed the junk programs and KPE still works.

Here is the site for ad-ware 6. "it's free"
http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/

Let me know if this works,

I'm sure that will work... I'm just dissapointed that KPE decided to go the adware route and make you do the extra work to sanitize it...

Plusone,
I agree. But I'm getting used to the idea of "battling" adware and spyware. Over the past couple of years the WWW has become a massive "sales campaign" LOL.

Just venting.....

I don't know if you have tried this, but if you right click on the file, which will look something like this:

download349761283476182374691239486192384

And choose copy, then paste it to somewhere in another directory (any directory), then usually it will play when you open it up in Windows Media Player. If you try and do this without copying first, the file will be in use by another application (Kazza)

You could use VirtualDUB for any files which are more troublesome, but this shows you MUCH more of the file in preview than the Kazza theatre (usually upto 4 times as much will come out) great for previewing potentially bogus files.

Paul.

I'm back...
...can't you smell the fear?

yeh thats true it does work occasionaly. However i havent looked inot as to why it plays for certain avi files and not for others it may actually be wat the inital person used to encode with (xvid, divx) although saying this it may be somink greater
thats also an option though however it doesn't work all the time.
