PS2 on a Dell LCD Problem

I have a version 3 PS2 i think, and a Dell 32" LCD screen hooked with component cables with 2 problems.

-I tryed playing PS1 games on the screen, but after the PS symbol comes up nothing shows on the screen but sound comes out.
-Also I just tryed playing wide screen dvds on it and I can't seem to be able to change the screen type to 16:9 (so the picture is squished).

Does anyone have any idea how i can fix these two things?
