Got on the computer today and read a small paragraph on the fact that Warner Bros. is thinking about releasing some of the next gen. movie in Hybrid Disc format; meaning that it will be a flipper disc--one side will have the next gen. format on one side of it and on the other side, there will be the standard dvd edition.
Now, I don't mean to spoil Warner Bros.' "cool" new idea, but I think it's kind of a waste of money when you think about it, because anyone that has enough money to afford the new HD players and discs is going to continually be buying them--they won't settle for something of lesser quality when they have the money to get something that's better.
Also, another thought about this is that why would you want to bundle those together?? It's simply the same movie on both sides; the only thing new here is the higher price. Yet, I can see where those come in handy; you may have a bluray/hddvd player in the house, but for when you want to take it on the road w/ the kids, you can pop it in the dvd player w/ no hassle of the differing formats.
Furthermore, I can also see another plus with this coming out; as to the fact that they're going to go through the trouble to still put the old standard dvd on newly released hybrids--this is a good thing in the sense of copy protections and backing up your own. It gives hope that DVD may be around for quite a while longer than I thought, so instead of waiting around for DVD JON to break the AACS on the new HD formats, you can just continue on with ripping DVDs until a stable ripping program is out that can decrypt the new formats.
With that said, my final thought on this is that I think upon the release of these new movie formats, consumers will be confused as to which one to buy because they're afraid their choice will become obsolete--so, in the end, personally I think neither Blu-Ray or HD-DVD will truly win in the end (Sales will have to decide.) but DVD will be the initial successor of the war because consumers will be so confused as to what to buy that they will have to resort to the format they know works and sells--standard DVDs!

--That is just something to think about- Now; I'm not totally relying on that, but that is a possible outcome; but if I had to choose a new format; I would pick HD-DVD; (my reasons will be posted in the thread by Lethal_B)but until there is a true winner, I'm sticking w/ the good 'ole standard DVD!! Just my 2 cents!

Blu-Ray will not be a 'flippit'. Blu-ray, due to being able to have many layers, can have a standard DVD format layer, and the rest Blu-ray format. JVC have already made prototypes.
