How to get High Quality DVD Decoding on PC?

With my current setup (PowerDVD) I get quite low quality video from a DVD, similar to watching an AVI file. When I watch DVDs on my standalone DVD player I get fantastic quality, can this be replicated on the PC?

Is the Decoder to fault? If so, what are my alternatives?
