Hey Guys,

Im new to all this, so please forgive the newbies question.

My Brother in law went to China, and took his Slim PS2 with him to get it modded. Before he took it, the PS2 had no problems playing Australian DVD Movies, but now it isnt able to play DVD Movies anymore. I would have thought installing a Chip would make the PS2 region free. Was I wrong in thinking that?

Are there chips that disable DVD Movie viewing on the PS2, or did he just get a dud, or did the installer stuff it up?
He has no problems playing the games whether there PAL or NTSC tho. If just not able to play any DVD Movies anymore.
Do you guys have any ideas whats wrong here?

Many thanks in advance for any replies.

Regards,
Coney

Well the whole region free deal is a little misleading. The DVD Firmware for the PS2 is not capable of playing DVD's in a video format from anther region. I.E. A PAL PS2 will play any PAL movies from any region, but not NTSC movies or vice versa, even if it's modded. There's currently no away around this.

Tokijin is correct. This is a limitation of the PS2 and not the mod chip. The strange thing about it is that PAL consoles can play NTSC DVD's just fine however the NTSC conaoles will NOT play PAL DVD movies. Dont get this confused with playing DVD PS2 games that is totally different then playing DVD movies with differnt formats. Also dont get the region free and format issues confused. Region free has nothing to do with the video standard.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the replies.

I understand what you are saying about PAL System being able to play PAL DVD Movies and Vice Versa, but what Im trying to find out is before the Mod, I could watch PAL DVD Movies on the PS2, but now, after installing a Mod chip, I cant watch anymore PAL DVD Movies at all.
Would anyone know why this has happened?

Once again, thanks in advance for any replies.

some chips require you to disable them to play dvd movies. If you could figure out which chip you have, it would help a lot.

V9 PS2, flip top, SMD, DVDLoader
Pioneer 107, ritek g05
DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, Nero

ooohhhh

well that might be something totally differnt. You see some DVD movies (a lot of the newer ones) have what is called RCE protection. What this means is that the DVD movie its self has imbedded code that looks up the region of the player and trys to match it the region of the DVD. If there is a mismatch you will get a message stating something like "this dvd will not play on this region player" or something like that. No I know what your thinking, "but this chip is suppose to make the PS2 play region free" well thats where the RCE protection comes in. Most chips that have region free set the PS2 dvd player to region 0 which means no region and any region DVD can be player. But like I stated already the DVD its self knows it needs to look for its own region on the player. So lets say OZ is region 4 (I dont know what region OZ is) and the RCE DVD find the player to be region 0 the DVD its self wont play because it knows whats up.

Some of the newer chips like the Infinity and Crystal chip have an RCE option that lets YOU set the region you would like. So instead of region 0 you could set it to region 1,2.3....5 whatever you would like.

What chip do you have? If you cant set the RCE region you might be able to disable the chip.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the replies.

I dont know what chip my brother in law got installed in his PS2. I dont think he even knows! :(

Is there a tutorial or something that shows me how I can open up the PS2 and have a look at the modchip? If I can open it up and take a picture of it and post it here, maybe someone might know which chip he got installed?

BTW, is there anyway to determine if the DVD has RCE Protection?

Thanks for any help.

Coney

You can simply pop the DVD in your PC DVD-ROM drive and open up DVD Decrypter, that'll tell if you it's RCE protected.

u can try the following steps which caters to different mod chips:

1) insert ur dvd movie and close the ps2. hold the power button till u see the blue screen. (most common way)

2) insert ur dvd movie and close the ps2.press reset button twice to power on the ps2.
