I have checked the dvd player on here & it says that it supports dvd+rw's yet when i put the +rw into the player it says "unknown disc". What am i doing wrong. I have tried several ways & so far nothing works. Please help.

Ok, the only problem i could think of is the type of disc cant be read, or the brand isnt up to par. Are you using +R or -R and what type of disks?

the disc are Maxell DVD+RW. I looked on this site to see whether the player was ok to read these discs & if i'm right it should be ok. The player is a Proline dvd1040.

You can't always go by what the specifications say when it comes to dvd players.

The No disc error 95% of the time is a compatablity issue.

Backup dvds are harder for them to recognize.

+r and -r are somewhat a little easier for them to recognize-still tougher.RW backups can be trickier.

You've got all these different types of discs, along with formats.Your stand alone player just can't recognize your +rws. They are great to practice with, but trickier for stand alone players.

What is the brand name and model # of your DVD-RW drive, that burned it?

Has that proline player played any dvd backups before, like from friends or family members burners?

You've got a no disc error on that stand alone player. It is telling you something is wrong with it.The DVD-RW verified it by playing it ok.

Here's the usual culprits.Starting with most likely culprit to least:

Format- Dash or Plus
Disc Type: R/RW/DL
Brand of disc-MID code
Dvd-rw drive quality/updated firmware-Crappy burners can be more difficult. Some drives are strong/some are weaker.
Burn engine.

It could be one or a couple of those and some stand alone players can really pick out any of them.Specially the more used-older players with a lot of wear and tear.

There's ways around that no disc error for certain brands of burners to help deal with that compatability issues.

Post back the name and # of your DVD-RW drive.

Are you having DVD Shrink output an ISO or a VIDEO_TS/AUDIO_TS folder?

Also make sure your burners firmware is up to date. You can check the version you have in Nero Tool Kit>Info Tool. Under the drive tab the firmware verrsion is listed. See if there is a later version here:
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php
The maxells +rw can be made from a few different manufacturers some good some not so good so it may be a compatibility issue. Players can be picky. It's finding which works best for you. I use Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim - no problems.
You can also check the manufacturer of those disc in Nero Info Tool under the disc tab (make sure one is in the drive).

I have played a DVD-/+R before & it worked with no problem. The burner is a Sony DVD RW DW-Q28A. Nero Burning Rom is version 6.6.0.15

Play what kind of backup before? +r/-r/rw/DL?

From that same sony burner?

I'm not sure if that model of sony has the ability to booktype. Booktyping would definitely help the compatability of your plus backups onto the player.

What's the firmware version of that sony drive?

Nero infotool will tell you that. It'll also tell you the MID code of those +rw maxells if you run it through infotool.

You said in the other thread that you had it output VIDEO_TS/AUDIO_TS folders. How did you burn this with NERO? it could be that you didnt burn it correctly to play on your DVD player but will play in your Computer DVD-drive.

It would be less complicated if you had it output an ISO file and then burn it using Nero. Select burn image file. Actully you should bebale to set up DVD Shrink to automaicly burn the ISO after it completes it using nero.

Wait, don't give up. A couple years ago, it was way too technical for me. I stuck around and am learning. The guys and gals on this forum are a great bunch and know a lot. So, if they get too fast for you, just slow them down. Listen and learn. Don' give up.

Too Technical?

It's all about compatability! This is not cd burning where everything you burn plays in any old cd player. Dvd burning is more extreme. Sometimes 6-7 gigs of data is being compressed to a 4.38 blank. Very extreme indeed.

Stand alone players can be picky when it comes to recognizing and playing dvd backups.Compression/burnspeed/formats/paper-sticker labels/multi-tasking/fragmented harddrives/spyware-malware/Burn engine/and crappy media are just a few of the things that give picky dvd players fits.

RW media is trickier on them. I know,I found this out 2 years ago when I bought a tv recorder and had a few shows on +rw and my apex player wouldn't play them. That apex did play those exact same memosux +rw that came from my benq burners. That apex was picky,it just didn't like the plus rw off of my cyberhome tv recorder.

You can change different programs, and 95% chance of still getting that same No disc error on those maxell +rws.

The easiest thing to do.Burn either plus r or dash r-whichever that player will recognize.
If you insist on using dvd +rw media, get you a $30 el cheapo player at walmart. They'll usually play anything, unless it's a very crappy burner.

You can search all over AD and there will be dozens of other peeps having the exact same issue or worse-playback issues. They can be very tricky to figure out.

Firmware controls the DVD-RW drives writing strategy-it's built into the drive. All media will have various MID codes. Firmware has a list of all these codes programmed into it.When you insert the blank, your firmware tells your drive how to properly burn that disc. You may be limited to certain speed,or not permitted at all to burn a certain media.

When you encounter media that spits out of your drive when it is suppose to burn, usually a firmware update will do the trick.Specially with newer media-speeds, hitting the market, and older drives don't have that MID code listed..

Keep up the effort. Before too long, you won't believe how easy it is to backup dvds. Main thing-Use quality media. Media is the #1 issue when it comes to dvd backups. Not only burning, but playback on stand alone players. Stick to the good stuff like japanese sony/fuji/maxell-taiyo yuden/or Verbatim. That quality media will prevent a lot of the issues for dvd backups. It's always the first thing to rule out.

Don't worry about not being able to play your plus rw backups. They cost more than +r. I only use them to practice with. I know stand alone players will definitely have a harder time reading them. As long as the sony drive can play it's own backups, you are OK!

Getting a successful backup to play on the drive that burned it may be easy, but stand alone players can do some very strange things when you slap backups in them. I've even encountered the opposite: Stand alone players play backups, whereas the drive that made those backups couldn't play it. It's all about compatability.Every dvd drive is different-stand alone or pc drive. What works for one drive, may not with another.

thanks Saugmon. I have tried saving the file in every way that i can & have been advised so i will assume for now that the Mazell RW's are the problem. Kinda confusing though as i have read reviews regarding my stand alone player & others have succesfully used RW's.The computer reads them absolutely fine so i can at least play them on the computer. I was wondering if the Book Type could be a problem as it automatically sets itself to DVD-ROM.

I don't know if that sony drive has the ability to booktype.

Where are you getting that autobooktype at? Nero/dvd shrink?

If they are actually booktyped, they have a better chance to get recognized.

Here's a program, free, and it'll tell you if your backups are booktyped or not. Just open it up,place one of those rw's in the drive/click identify/then click clip board/and paste it into your next post. It'll look just like this:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD+R:YUDEN000-T02-000]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc & Book Type : [DVD+R] - [DVD-ROM]
Manufacturer Name : [Taiyo Yuden Co. Ltd.]
Manufacturer ID : [YUDEN000]
Media Type ID : [T02]
Product Revision : [Not Specified]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,295,104 Sectors = 4.70 GB (4.38 GiB)]
Recording Speeds : [1x-2.4x , 4x , 6x-8x]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[ DVD Identifier - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com ]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The link is in the bottom. To the right of Disc Type and Booktype-it'll show if they are actually booktyped to dvd rom like my backups are.
