Many forums and experts are always telling me to upgrade my firmware to the latest version to help solve my problems ripping with my Sony DVD-RW drive. Am I to assume that Sony is constantly working at improving their firmware so as to help me rip their DVDs more easily?? Somehow that doesn't make sense.

Hi,

Basically what updating your firmware does is tell your burner how to deal with newer media that is consistently coming onto the market. It is embedded into the BIOS of the device rather than thru software. Once firmware is updated you cannot remove it (though some have been able to on rare instances). it does allow your drive to work smoother with different types of media *example...if your drive was originally a DVD-R, a firmware update would allow it to burn to DVD+R as well/ with the growing competition of media conglomerates joining in the ever-expanding blank media not all use the same media coding which for older burners causes them not to recognize the new media and cause errors.

Just my definition off the head of what firmware does.

to burn or not to burn that is the question
