Hi, I have a sony pcg-grt170 with an internal sony dvd dw rw-u50a burner. It worked absolutely fine until I tried to burn some hi-speed 6x-10x cd-rw's...it reads them after I had them burnt on another burner, but still won't burn them.

Lately, I got some Sony cd-r's...1x-48x/700mb/80min. When I tried to burn data to the cd-r's, the writing wizard says the drive writes at a lower speed than the highspeed disks in drive??? and is unable to write to disk...thought they were multiple speed compatible...I tried to set a lower burn speed, didn't work, I tried to set a higher burn speed, didn't work.

The drive reads other data cd's I've burnt, on this drive and others, but don't seem to like to cooperate with the new cd-r's from the same brand...I burnt data to the sony cd-r's on another burner, and the drive recognizes the data cd as a blank cd!

Anyone got a clue? Please take into consideration that I'm a bit of an oldschool newbie, so go easy on the abreviations...

What firmware version do you have. I show 1.5g as the latest for you.

Hi,

Actually got the drive cooperating with the sony cd-r's...and most of the other ones it had ignored for a while, by cleaning the lens with a q-tip and distilled water...

But the adventure is not over...

Now it shows:

used space: 28.2MB
free space: 85.5MB
capacity: 113MB

on the sony cd-r i had a problem with! It's far from the 700MB capacity of the disk. It does similar stuff on other cd-r's that it had problems reading before the cleaning, like:

used space: 5.5 MB and free space: 0 MB

that is on several cd-r's...is that a reading problem?

I tried to add data to those discs that it says has O MB free space, and the writing wizard says the disc is full...but i had checked them on another drive, they still have the free space they should have left...

Is this the discs, or drive that does weird things?

Thanks for any help i can get!

@purlpurl

if you are using cd-rs for data discs and if you delete something from the cd-r data disc, then the file will be erased BUT the disc space is not reclaimed as with a CD-RW disc would. You could have 450 mb of data on the disc and have another 250mb of data deleted, but the disc is still full.

Hi,

I don't think i erased the data on the disc...anyways, on the sony cd-r's, i only tried to burn, so have no idea what happened...

Well, and my joy with the sony cd-r's didn't last too long, the same happened when i tried to burn another disc, cd-writing wizard saying the drive writes at a slower speed than the high speed disc in drive...

What is the problem? How come the drive can't write to the disc, even within one of the speeds it compatible with?
