How would I get data from a DVD and convert it to a playable form on my pc?

Okay, say I have a DVD with some TV shows on it and I have a DVD burner on my PC.

What exactly do I need to take this DVD and convert it into files that I can play through Windows Media Player?

kind of urgent, so if you could help that would be great

you fail to mention what DVD you are trying to play in Windows media player.... which it should play already on your PC! make sure you checked off ALL FILES in your settings on Windows Media Player..... and the DVD should play......

If all you want to do is put the files on your puter to play, then just go into my computer and drag and drop what is on your DVD to a folder, if you are talking backing up these files then that is something different.

Ok I want to take the data from the DVD and convert it into like AVI or something so I can send it to a friend...

You can try something like Xillisoft or IMTOO they both will convert to AVI, don't know if they have free trials though.

AutoGK is without a doubt the way to go... check it out (http://www.autogk.me.uk/) and give it a shot.

Also, you can try AoA DVD Ripper http://www.aoamedia.com/dvd_ripper.htm . It's a not free but they offer free trial.
