Do Sony, Fuji and Maxell pay more for TY's thats made in japan, than they do for media made in taiwan? Or does it not work like this? If they pay about the same...why not have all their media made in japan since its better?

Media made in Japan cost more than media made in Taiwan because the cost of labor, productivity, and materials is higher in Japan. The Taiwanese have the most modern high-speed equipment designed for mass production, and they produce about 90% of all the optical discs made (at least according to statistics that do not include pirate production). "Made in Japan" does not mean product is better than than made in Taiwan. Even Taiyo Yuden has been reported to be shopping for capacity in Taiwan. If CMC made TY discs, they would probably be indistinguishable from those made in Japan; but they would be less expensive. Check out the equipment production web sites to find out who buys what. The latest equipment usually goes to Taiwan.
