Hi there. First of all, this is a very informative site and I am liking it very much. But I have some questions here about my mod chip in my PS2.

I am from Australia, and seeing as this is an American based website, I am assuming the whole mod chip range is different.

Well, I have had my PS2 since November 2002, so it is an older version (not a slimline). I'd like to get exact model number but I can't at the moment. I got a mod chip installed in about December 2002. I have never come across this mod chip before on the internet, but my one is apparently called "Delta Mod". This is the sticker on the bottom of my PS2 put there by the installer which also has the exact date of installation.

1) My backed up games, and now my originals take more than one boot to load. I.e. what basically happens is I put the game in, it comes up with Sony Computer Entertainment and then takes its time and go to the PS2 menu screen. Sometimes it will then go to the red "Please Insert a PS or PS2 disc" or stay at the menu until you press reset again. It will take a few resets to get the game fully working and it gets annoying because of the waiting and the constant failing to load. Can anyone explain to me why? It happens with all games, they take more than one boot. Bad mod chip? What's the deal? It has done this throughout most of its life but I have learnt to live with it.

2)The installer also said that a certain method helps the games load first go and definately second if first fails. That method is open the disc tray, put game in tray, hold reset until disc goes in, turns to red led, then press reset again. But still, it takes more than once to load a game. Has anyone come across this method or know others that will get games working first go? Enlighten me on this bad loading issue!

3) My mod chip does not allow online play which has been very annoying. I know there are chips than can be turned on and off to allow online access, as well as the Swap Magic. Now, seeing as the PS3 will be out soon enough, does anyone know how long after the PS3 launch a mod chip will be available? And I want one installed that allows online play, that's the most important thing.

4) I purchased Gran Turismo 4, which I know is a DVD9 (Duel Layer), but I was stunned when it did not load on my PS2! Even though it was an original and all original games are suppose to work on it regardless, it didn't! So I backed it up with a duel layer even, and still did the same thing! It is obvious that my mod chip is an old one that doesn't support DVD9 and I need an upgrade. So I rang my mod chip installer and he said that I will need to upgrade the chip to a new one that allows the playing of DVD9 games. The chip however will set me back AU$100 (approx US$71). I put it off for over a year and am now considering that fact that slim lines are now in, so the chip for the older PS2 will have reduced in price. The thing that put me off is that I already spent AU$150 (aprox US$107) on my first chip, and I don't want to spend more on a new on when the PS3 is approaching. However, I desperately want to play GT4 that I now have two options. Get the new chip or go for the tedious rebuliding of the game. What should I do?

Any help, comments, advice would be much appriciated. My mod chip seems like a dodgy one and I'd like any help possible.

Kind Regards, Christos.

1) games taking longer to boot up could be due to your laser wearing out rather than the mod making them take longer to boot.
2) you can play backups online with a modchip installed, you can patch the images with a dnas id which lets you pass the dnas check, having said that some games you can't play online with backups no matter what you do (socom2,3). To play originals online you'd have to turn the modchip off, call your modchip installer to find out if your mod has this feature or not.
3) for playing a dvd9 again check with your installer to see if the mod turns off, then turn off the mod if you can and load the game. If not then you'll have to rebuild/rip the game down to dvd5 or see if you can download a rebuilt/rip version.

OK, thanks for those answers. Can you tell me more about dnas id though and how to play backups online?
