I have a Lite-On DVD 2010 Network DVD player and I'm in the process of building a Media Server to store my entire DVD collection on ( I'm a lazy sod and this will mean I never have to swap a disc / change a disc ever again, other than loading the DVD to the server :D )

Now I'm having problems getting the player to play the Vob files correctly, I'm assuming this has something to do with the 1gb Vob file size restriction I've heard about !?!.

What sort of quality loss can I expect if I shrink and entire movie from 4.5gb to 1GB ? will shrink even do this ?

Not sure what you mean here, but if your player won't play the files, the try using Media Player Classic, it will.
