PS2 CD Games - Do they require the .sub?

Hello people =o)

Just a quick question regarding backing up PS2 CD games...

As with PSX games, CloneCD produces 4 files (.ccd, .cue, .img & .sub). Now apparently some PSX games had a sort of copy protection in that sub layer. So I'm just asking if they are necessary for PS2 CD backups. Reason being, I'm trying out all of my games on pcsx2 for compatibility, and it would certainly save a bit of space if I could get rid of those .sub files. But if they are necessary, then so be it. Any thoughts or tips would be appreciated =o)

If anyone is wondering why I don't just run the game from the disc, my answer to that is I am trying both ways (.iso & direct from disc)to see which is most compatible. Anyone doubting the legitimacy of ownership or anything, feel free to request a photo of me with my games if it helps you sleep at night... =o)
