I just purchased 100 genuine TYs but now that I look at them, they are 4x, hence the cheap price i got them for. Here is my question. Is it safe to burn these at 4x like I normally do for movies? I was always under the impression that you shouldnt burn at the max, but at half the max (in this case, obviously 2x).
Thanks in advance,
Sincerely,
Andre

yes, as my friend teflonmyk stated, it is just fine to burn the TYG01s (4x dvd-r) @ 4x...there is really NO NEED to slow it down to 2x, i can imagine that the quality once burned would be worse if you did so...the 4x TYG01s, as rare as they are nowadays, are very high quality media...they are right up there with the 8x DVD-R TYG02s that most people nowadays look for locally and online~ :)

if i may ask, what burner are you using for these? make sure the firmware is up to date..but, burn @4x (max in this case)...have confidence in your TYs...you shall be pleased...

Kivory and teflon,
Thank you very much for the quick responses. Doc, I use 8x TYG02 right now (burn at 4x always for movies), but the deal on these 4x, i couldnt pass up ;) I am using two different burners, SOny DRU-510a on the desktop and a NEC-6650a for my laptop. (updated firmware for both).

you are just fine with those 2 burners...if you had a benq, i would suggest you burn your TYG02s @8x, but, that's just ME and my various setups...i have a Sony dru-710a, a few steps above yours, it's actually a rebadged Liteon 1633S, i burn my 8x DVD-R TYG02s @8x on that drive too, with BYX5 firmware from Sony, but that's just ME again~ :)

if you are not having any issues with burning your backups @4x, then by all means, stick with that speed you are comfortable with...i know from the past that both teflonmyk and myself have a few of the same drives and we both burn @8x consistently...but, the bottom line is, stick with what YOUR system/burner is comfortable with that provides the best results~ :)

but, on TY 4x DVD-R that are TYG01 media ID coding, definitely burn them @4x, not slower...

happy burning

docTy~

Kivory,
Thank you for your time and effort. I will continue to burn at 4x like i do with the sony ( which is only a 4x burner anyway ;) and i will see how 8x works with my NEC. I know why they call you DocTY now :)
Thanks again,
Andre

your NEC 'likes' the 8x speed also
since it is used on a laptop make sure no other application is on the loose :)
it is x-tra important on laptops.
