How do I change the recording mode of my DVD burner?

I was finally able to figure out how to make a back up copy of my dvd's and get them to burn, but if my dvd is only 4.7GB, how can I burn a movie that is over 120 minutes long. If a blank CD-R will hold 80 minutes at 700MB, then a DVD with 4.7GB should be able to hold much, much more. My blank DVD+RW's say that you can record in SP=120,LP=180 minutes and EP=240 minutes, how can I burn my DVD's in LP, or EP? I don't see anything that allows me to change my recording mode, most movies (i.e Lord of the Rings is 178 minutes), it won't fit on my DVD in SP mode. I guess what I am asking is how do I change the recording mode. I am using windows XP, and I have Nero, as well as DVD Decrypter. Any help will be appreciated.

4.36 gb is the most you can get on the dvd,don`t ask me why just read on this forum here!!!

If you want to record a big video file on your DVDR, then you need to compress the file. Use software like DVD2ONE or DVD95COPY for this.

Just curious Bruce, what program are you using? I haven't seen anything on a computer that allows you to set recording modes like SP and EP. I've only seen that on stand alone DVD recorders. (DVD VCR's)

Agree with ken0042. I only seen them in DVD recorders (non pc types)

You are probably correct. I am using DVD Decrypter and Nero, but some supposed tech at my local compUsa store said I would be able to change it. If I use a program such as DVD2one or the DVD95copy will I be able to back up my larger DVD's using Nero, or DVD Decrypter?

That makes more sense. You are just missing the one step.
After you rip the movie with DVD Decrypter, use DVD2one to get it under 4.36 GB to fit on one disk. Then burn the resulting files with Nero.
Make sure all the files are in a folder called VIDEO_TS and create an empty folder called AUDIO_TS
Please note the caps and the underscore. Those are very important.

One more thing, should I be ripping in ISO mode, or IFO mode. I believe that i get an error in ISO mode saying it does not recognize the file in ISO.

I burn in UDF/IFO mode because when i first started i used to get errors with ISO mode also.
Smartripper:
Play a bit of DVD in PowerDVD/WinDVD
Open Smartripper and press FILE then where you have .VOB's ticked
A typical VIDEO_ST folder of a DVD is similar to :
VIDEO_TS BUP 16,384
VIDEO_TS IFO 16,384
VIDEO_TS VOB 43,008
VTS_01_0 BUP 77,824
VTS_01_0 IFO 77,824
VTS_01_0 VOB 1,695,744
VTS_01_1 VOB 1,073,565,696\
VTS_01_2 VOB 1,048,565,696 \ <-- This is the Main movie
VTS_01_3 VOB 1,048,565,696 /
VTS_01_4 VOB 589,365,248 /
VTS_02_0 BUP 18,432
VTS_02_0 IFO 18,432
VTS_02_0 VOB 43,008
VTS_02_1 VOB 6,014,976
You will need to tick the box 2 above - in this case VTS_01_0 IFO 77,824
Select destination & start.
DVD2One: (I keep 2 empty folders for this VTS_01/VTS_02)
Movie-Only
Source:Where you have Smartripper .VOB's & .IFO
Destination:Any empty folder
I usually select size at 4272Mb (never had to run it thru DVD2One again like some because file is still too big - can leave it at 4472 if you like)
Next
Select title (which will be longest in length)
Next
AC3 6CH/English/Angle1
Start
DVD2One will now compress & add vital .BUP (s) for Nero
Nero - DVDvideo
click on VIDEO_TS folder then drag & drop all files into there...and burn
WITHOUT MULTI-SESSION
Sit back for an hour & have a Camberwell Carrot and a cup of tea.
(I suggest burning Video at X1 even if you have X2 capabilities)

I just use file mode in DVD Decrypter. To be honest I've never tried any other mode.

Thanks everyone for all of the info, it has been very helpful. Let me ask this, does anyone know of a good dvd ripping, shrinking, and burning program all in one. With the programs I have now, i have to use 2-3 programs to back up my DVD'd. Is there a program on the market that will do all of this, but that it easy to use?

Part of the reason why we use several different programs is this: By using different programs the writters of the software protect themselves somewhat from potential lawsuits. The issue of copying DVD's for the purposes of your own backups is still being contested in the courts. Once you get used to using the different software, it all becomes second nature.

Try Pinnacle Systems InstantCopy. The movie has to rippe to the HD first DVDDecrypter is what I use in file mode (select all files), then run InstantCopy. It recompresses the video fits all files on the new DVD (little to no discernable difference)... Give it a try.

Thanks for all of the help everyone. The pinnacle instant copy has solved my problem. I am able to back up my dvd's with no problem. Thanks all for your input. This site really helps.
