I have some dvds burned onto tdks (the white printable kind). And they were all burned using Mac the Ripper and Toast on my iMac g5.

These disks play perfectly on my iMac but when I try playing it on my xbox it skips terribly.

I also encoded and burned them perfectly - they shouldn't have any problems.

Is it the XBOX, is it the TDK's?

I want to switch to Taiyo Yudens in a couple years.
Will reburning the TDK's to Taiyo Yudens make the disks more compatible for dvd players?

yes.. is it possible for you to do them off the originals? dont know if they would be read correctly.. if so.. get them over to taiyo yuden..

the major difference is that they tdk's may not read correctly if you wait any longer.. especially since they are skipping already on the xbox.

if doc jumps in on this one.. he will tell you how he feels about the tdks.. *hint: not at all*

*here i am..jumping on this one* LOL

while i am not very knowledgeable about gaming consoles whatsoever, if they play fine on your imac, i am going to ASSUME that the xbox is a much more picky player...have you tried playing them on any standalone dvd players? i know that different versions of PS2 and xbox and the other gaming consoles can throw fits when playing certain burned backups...so, i would try your backups on a few home standalone players to see if the same problem arises...IF they do, then def. transfer them to the Taiyo Yudens, from the originals preferably, good luck on ripping them from the TDKs (ugh, i don't personally like TDKs, in MY OPINION, they suck and they suck hard) :)

IF there are no issues playing on other standalones, then it's your xbox being non-cooperative/picky, but bottom line, if it were ME, i wouldn't hesitate to put MY backups from tdk to taiyo yuden as soon as possible~ that's just my OPINION on it~

thanks a lot doc for the help.

i'm buying some 8x silver thermal taiyos
about 500~ to reburn my tdks.

i found out that the xbox dvd player is VERY picky with burned media.
it's also a terrible overall dvd player - it screws up the quality of the image.

if the dvds play fine on my imac - isn't it possible that i can rip the backup onto the computer, create an iso (which will have no flaws during playback on the hard drive), then burn it onto a taiyo yuden - creating the perfect cd?

or has the tdk media rid me of all hope?

If the TDKs are playing properly on your imac, then that drive can properly read them and correct any errors. You can always copy the files from the TDKs to the hard drive and record them again to Taiyo Yuden discs with no loss in quality. Try a TY disc on the xbox first to see if the transfer is worth it. If those discs also have a problem, it is possible that the xbox is not working properly. The problem with drives is that there are few specs for them: all the specs are applied to media, and the drives are supposed to play them with certain output voltages based on specific signals. That's it! It is not uncommon for a drive to have problems with groove geometry of discs that fully meet their specifications, and then the discs get blamed for quality issues.
