Hey everyone, I need help with my PS2, it has gradually been deteriating in the past couple weeks, but strangely it has stopped booting all DVD5 discs. I have some dvd9 silvers that work fine, but all of my dvd5 discs (silvers and dvd-rs) have stopped working. I do not have any originals to test. Most of my discs were working up until yesterday and now only dvd9 silvers are working. I'm using a PS2 V4 with a magic 3.1 installed. Movies will play fine on the PS2 without any problems, and also the dvd9 silvers bootup fine, so I'm guessing it has nothing to do with the laser. When I try booting a dvd5 silver or dvdr the disc will start to load then goto the browser screen quickly then switch to the red screen of please insert a valid ps2 disc. When I try loading from the browser screen it will recognize the disc as a PS2 game disc and when I select the disc to load it will jump back to browser screen and sometimes it will goto the red screen. When booting regularly I can hear the disc spinning and loading normally until the screen goes black and BEFORE "Playstation 2" flashes onto the screen the disc will stop spinning then the browser screen will show up briefly and then the red screen. I haven't tried adjusting the laser as I don't think this is the problem since dvd9 discs are working fine. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance

try the simplist thing first, try cleaning the laser
then adjusting it

when my laser was starting to go it would play some discs but not others. cleaning and adjusting the laser helped.
That or have someone take a look at it. Someone who repairs them i mean.

I'm thinking it might be the chip itself. Magic 3.1's have been complained about by many for not lasting.

You're not getting any disc read errors, right? Just the invalid ps2 disc? That means the chip isn't doing its job of loading the info from it instead of the ps2.

How long have you had the ps2 modded?

It's been about 1 1/2 years now that I put the Magic 3.1 in it. I really doubt it's the laser because I've been watching movies and such without any hickups or freezing and the DVD9 discs play flawlessly. I haven't gotten any disc read errors either, it's just the red screen of invalid ps2 disc. Looks like I'll try adjusting the laser then perhaps switch my chip to something else. Thanks for the input, if anyone else has any suggestions let me know, thanks.

I know in your first post you stated you didn't have any originals. Before you go adjusting your laser, I'd either borrow or atleast rent a dvd-based original and try it out.

Are your DVD9's the same make as your DVD5's. If the PS2 laser is getting old a better type of disc might be the answer.
