You can still get the ripper part of DVDFab Platinum for free, it is DVDFab Decrypter and it will rip to your HDD and then you can compress your movie using the free program DVD Shrink. This program will create an iso file and you can then burn with the free DVD Decrypter. DVD Decrypter will also rip movies besides burn although it does not do the newer protected movies such as The Fog, Chicken Little, Memoirs of a Geisha to name a few. You can get the sw here

http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/software.htm

And a guide on how to use them here

http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/backup%20with%20DVDFABDecrypter,S...

It is a few more steps than using DVDFab Platinum but the keyword is that the programs are all free and do just as good a job. If you have more questions just post back, happy burning :)

Then dl DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn and save your file in iso format and either or these two programs will burn to a DVD.

If you want to burn your image at a later time then choose iso image on the backup screen in Shrink, if you want to burn it right away then choose iso image burn with Decrypter

For later burn choose a folder on your HDD for the output file in the target image file, for immediate burn then select your burner as the target.

Here is a guide that will explain all the ins/outs of Shrink.

You open your ripped file, or if not a newer movie you can rip with Shrink. You hit backup in Shrink on the Target Device screen you choose iso burn with Decrypter, choose your DVD burner as your target image device. Hit okay and let it go, Decrypter should automatically start after your transcoding/encoding and burn your disk.
