Hey everyone. I have heard that for generic dvd-r, the top part of the dvd-r will degrade and flake off over time. A couple of people recommended to me to put labels on my generic dvd-r so this doesn't happen. just wondering if this is true or not?

I have never seen this on regular silver and purple DVD's. I have seen where some of the white top (ink jet printable) DVD's will have flaking on top. I think it was just caused by the heat of the printer and not a default of the DVD.
Hopefully more people who've been doing this a while will chime in.

PS I hope whomever told you this wasn't trying to sell you a DVD label maker also. hahahahaha. Just kidding.

Hello
I have never had this happen. Even if it does I can`t see it being a problem. Single sided 4.7GB discs are different then CD-R`s. in a CD the write surface is actually near the top of the disc, thus cd can have the bottom a little scratched up and still plays ok. But a DVD uses the bottom surface to write, so if a DVD-R is a little scratch is will skip and act crazy. Thus why DVD`s can have four total layers, two on the bottom and two for the top. Cd`s can not be made this way as it is a single waffer with the top coating ( an alumium disc) as the actual write surface. So for DVD be very carfull with the bottom surface and for CD`s don`t puncture the top writable region.
