I did King Kong with AnyDVD and Shrink and can get only 51%. I notice a diffrence in the picture quality, it could be better. Are there any programs anyony can recommend to get better quality or compression? Thanks for any help you may give.

after you rip your DVD to the compuetr use this program to make an AVI CD: -

Or if you need a good AVI converter this one is the best: -

I used DVD Decrypter and Shrink, and it was about 50% compression (it is about 3 hours on a single DVD, which should have probably been a two DVD movie but wasn't). Quality turned out pretty good, it may be a difference of encoding from a file (ripped from DVD) as opposed to straight from the DVD. There isn't much in the way of extras, but you can compress them a bit and gain maybe another % compression. As there are no extras of any importance, you may just want to cut them out and take out the menus too to buy additional compression %. Probably not as good as you were looking for, but it helps a bit to gain a bit of compression. Someone more advanced than I can probably advise how to break the movie into two DVDs without having to compress at all...

princedvd,
You can use the free version of DVD-Rebuilder or purchase the Pro program and then use the HC encoder w/ it.

I have to agree with Car.Mike, I did my backup using DVD RB and CCE but did movie only and it came out great. Also did it using Nero Recode, which is an updated Shrink by the same developer of Shrink who now works for Nero. I used advanced analysis and slow encode it to over an hour for Recode to do and the quality although good was not as good as RB. Try the program out, it does take some time to do your backup but the results are well worth the wait.

I agree with both (buddies) arniebear and Car.Mike, if you want the best quality in results, then go with DVD-RB Pro + CCE SP. However, it is definitely "not" a joke though -- it's "encoding" times can take up to 2 1/2 hrs - 3 1/2 hrs just for a single movie.

I used to use Nero Recode 2 (AA + HQSR), but now-a-days I've been using DVD-RB Pro more and more since I've acquired the Pro version.

Best of lucks to all and happy burning!!

@princedvd

In a different vein if your burner is capable of doing DL discs then this is the time to spring for the $2 DL Verb and back it up with no compression. copy the DVD with either decrypter or Nero.

I split it onto 2 disks, no compression. Used Shrink, I only take the movie with re-auther, move the slider to begin and end each disk. Really simple.

Open Shrink, select Open Disk, un-tick any audio not wanted, click Re-auther, double click main movie. Just the main movie is now on the left in Re-authored DVD section. Now click on the little box with the blue arrows going left and right in the DVD Compilation area. This will bring up a start/end frame authoring screen. Just click on the arrows to FastForward or FastReverse to just get the movie. You would be suprised how much compression you save by getting ride of junk in the front and credits in the rear of a movie. Now to split to 2 disc's, just select the last chapter you want to have on disc one and select OK. You will see the size of the disc on the bottom. Continue on as usual. For Disc 2, Just go through the same steps, except select the next chapter as your start chapter, and end with the last chapter.( If you had chapter 12 as the last chapter on disk one, then select chapter 13 on disk two) Note: on the second disk, when you select the start chapter, use the back arrow and go back a couple frames to capture the end of disc one. This helps to refresh where you left off.

This may sound like a lot, but you will breeze through it once you get the hang of it.
